Hi! I’m trying to use Go To Bar to jump around my score. I can’t figure out the logic of where the bar I ask for will appear. Sometimes it’s the left of the screen; sometimes it’s the right. These are bars that are not visible on the screen when I try the tool. I’d prefer it to normally put the bar at the left - can I set a preference for that?
The bar should be visible in the window, after applying the command go to bar from the Jumpbar or using the shortcut Command(Control)+G. It is not always possible to define it at the left of the screen, though:
- in Page viewor in Fill view for example, if the chosen bar is at the end of a system, the whole system is visualised, and the chosen bar will be at the right end of the screen
- in Galley view, instead, the chosen bar [edit: should]
willbe the first on the left, so this is probably what you would like to use. [Edit: But as @tzalia observes it depends if the bars follows or precede the current view]

Can you share a Dorico project where the behaviour is different then the description above?
I’m in Galley view. What I mean is: if I Go To Bar 5 while I’m looking at bars 1-8, nothing happens, because bar 5 is already on the screen. That is as the manual describes.
But if I Go To a bar that isn’t on the screen, it should be as you describe:
But that’s not what happens. If I’m looking at bars 1-8, and command-G to bar 50, I get bar 50 at the right edge of the screen. If I then command-G to bar 10, I get bar 10 at the left edge of the screen.
The pattern seems to be: going forward puts the requested bar on the right, while going backward puts the requested bar on the left.
I’ve tried it with multiple files and it’s the same experience every time.

I can’t help it, but I find this behaviour quite pleasing and helpful. If I am looking at something further on, I will be looking to the right. That is, where Dorico places the view. Either your screen is wide enough that you can see bar 50, or Dorico shifts the view in a way as if you had that wide a screen: it extends the view to bar 50 - on the right.
Same if you want to go to a prior bar: you look to the left side of your screen, and if that bar isn’t visible there, the command will shift the view, so it gets into your sight.
This is very cleverly and ergonomically designed, in my opinion.
It is clever but I think that it is making assumptions that are not always patently true. Many of us work left to right — even southpaws (left-handed) like me. I may pick up a magazine and start from the back but I read the articles forward. To have my chosen measure appear at the right edge assumes I want to work backwards rather than from that point forward. I would prefer to have my choice in the middle – no matter what – so that I can see it in context in either direction.

I agree. Usually I’m going to a measure so I can start writing in it, so I want to see the blank space that I’m about to fill up.

This is exactly, what Dorico will give you (I have highlighted the blank spaces in the appropriate bars or measures).
You write something around bar 15 and want to go and input something in bar 50.
Start here at bar 15:
Now invoke the Jumpbar and go to bar 50:
It will bring you to bar 50, where you can start inputting music:
Now back to bar 15 and let the Jumpbar go to bar 3:
It will bring you to bar 3, where you can start inputting music:

I prefer that the bar jumped to is always at the left - so I can see the entire space that my phrase of music will fill. From a practical standpoint, I can also look to the same place on the screen every time I use the tool.
I was hoping this arrangement was a default that I could change - that was my original question - but it sounds like not.
