Goran Grooves latin percussion VST installed but not connecting

I’m going to be honest, I’m not really sure what you are trying to do here. Typically in Dorico you’d just add an instrument like a Quinto, then the sound for that would be assigned via your chosen Playback Template. If you weren’t happy with the sound or wanted to use a different VST, you’d change it or load a different Playback Template. Once you were happy you can save the endpoints and create your own Playback Template so the sounds would automatically load in the future. You wouldn’t create both a Halion Quinto and a Handy Drums Quinto which is what it seems like you want to do.

I’m sure I’ve muddied the water by not being familiar with the nominclature or any previous recording or engraving software. You’ve really hung in there with my attempts.

I’m not interested in any of the Halion sounds at all. I want to use the HD library in my composition, particularly the cascara sound which are not in the Dorico program. I do understand that my percussion map needs to now include more playing techniques (I thought I could rely on the “natural” description when an instrument said something like Conga Open as I added a key switch…but that is not sufficient.)

I think you’ve best described what I’ve been after with your last post…

“If you weren’t happy with a sound or wanted to use a different VST you’d change it or load a different Playback Template-then save the endpoints and create your own playback template.” How is this done?

I want to use only the HD sounds but can’t grasp how to build a percussion kit with them.

If that gives you a starting point to answer the issue I’d be very appreciative or if there’s an obvious training video that addresses this that you could recommend that would work too. The videos are very helpful for the most part but not so much in this case.

I will be out of town all next week, but will try to use the information you’ve provided above this weekend to review your approach with whatever videos that seem to apply.

Thanks again,

Mark

It’s a great series, definitely worth the time.

I’ve now spent about 4 weeks on this one issue with many videos watched (including these) over and over.

The question that I’ve tried to present is-- can a VST percussion program (in this case GoranGroves Latin Percussion) which is successfully loaded with a corresponding percussion map be used to create a percussion kit in the same way as a kit would be created using Groove Agent or similar Dorico kits. In a previous project, I didn’t have trouble creating a kit from Groove Agent.

It seems that I don’t need an Expression Map for this particular effort. The videos on Playback Templates and Endpoint setups don’t seem to shed any light on this. All the drum sounds in the Dorico Groove Agent are contained in one instance so it’s easy to create a kit from it, but how would I access all the sounds in the GoranGrooves VST to do the same thing?

This seems like an easy question…either I’m missing a fundementa concept entirely or not describing it very well. I would be glad if someone could connect the dots for me.

Optimistically,

Mark

I think this is where (for me at least), I’m confused about your goal. Do you want to be able to go into setup and choose “Mark’s GoranGrooves Kit” from the instrument picker with a pre-defined set of instruments? Or perhaps you want to pick individual instruments and have them loaded and routed automatically?

There are many Groove Agent work flows …

I want to know if it’s possible to go into setup, create an empty percussion kit, and then pull particular instruments from the GoranGrooves Latin Percussion VST into the kit and begin the process of placing those instruments on the 5 line stave to add to my score.

All the training videos show only instruments being pulled from the dropdown list provided in Dorico as possibilities to fill an empty kit. The Goran list has a more complete and varied menu that I would prefer to use.

This is the snag that blocks me from moving forward although I have created the percussion map for Handy Drums, I don’t see how to use it (or if I need to use it) to get the desired HD sounds into a new kit.

If the VST offers instruments that aren’t in the instrument picker, you will need to create them in Library → Instruments (click the star so they are available in future projects). It’s best to find a similar instrument and create a variant. Once that is done, you will need to set up the routing and percussion maps, both, for the newly created instruments as well as instruments chosen from the instrument picker. Next, save the endpoint. Finally, under Play → Playback Template, create a new template, add your new endpoint and add, e.g., Groove Agent factory under that.

I find it easiest to start with the Silent playback template applied so Dorico doesn’t load any endpoints automatically.

So, I need to ADD the instruments I want to the instrument picker list already in the set up menu, or (in the case of, let’s say timbales) create variants for rim shots, hand muffles, cascara right and left, etc.?

Could I add the HD timbales and use those main sounds if I prefer them as long as I differentiate that entry from the original picker entry? This sounds promising…thank you.

I don’t quite understand after add endpoint..add Groove Agent, etc. after that…

You need to create new instruments if they aren’t available in the instrument picker.

These are play(ing|back) techniques. For right/left hits, I created a RH playing/back technique.

Yes (if by HD you mean Handy Drums). Add timbales in the instrument picker and route it to HD in Play mode.

… then you should definitely review the first video I posted “What is a Playback Template”.

Thank you…will be out of town this week but will be back to work on this soon…
