Grace note timing - sounds 'kinda triplet-y'

Is it Dorico or Note Performer that is determining the timing for graces notes?

On the final note of a piece in a bright tempo (qtr = 132) this figure comes out almost like a 32nd note triplet (demisemiquaver triplet).

I’d like to get it tighter so it’s more of a ‘schmear’ (as real players would execute it.)

It would be great if grace notes had a lower panel option to alter their playback timing.

And if you then adjusted velocity as well as timing, you could also make better sounding drum flams.

You can experiment with Library>Playback Options>Timing>Grace notes.

Thanks - missed it when looking.

Still would love an individual note adjustment in the lower panel.

Hi @michaelstarobin, you can adjust the playback for the grace notes very individually, using the Played Duration view in the Key Editor.
Here an example with

  • the global setting as set in Playback Options (for the first grace notes group) and
  • a customised manual duration/position of the grace notes, just dragging them like in a DAW (for the second grace notes group):

Here more informations, in the Manual:

Once you have visually set the desired positions, you can see the Playback Start Offset for every note and eventually copy the value to other notes (or just select the desired notes in all staves before you drag them):

Thanks, guys. I have also noticed this triplet effect.

I generally wrote out the “smear” in real notes and used two-against-three or four-against-three note tuplets in the different instruments to accentuate the “smear” effect.

Nice idea! I’ll have to try that.
