Gracenotes and Dynamics

Hello, I’m fighting with a dynamics-for-gracenotes-issue, with a hairpin.

In galley view, it doesn’t show at all. In Page view, if I have so much as one bar before it, i.e. a barline, it disappears. After it, though, I can put as many bars as I want.

Even adding a system break before it causes the hairpin to come back.

I reckon it has something to do with how Dorico calculates space and the minimum space for hairpins. Am I doing something wrong or is this an unintended effect?

I’m experiencing the same issue right now. A hairpin on grace notes only appears in the first bar of a system and only in Page view. Strangely though, after applying a system break to make the hairpin appear I am able to Alt+click the notes to different rhythmic positions without losing the hairpin, except when the new position is at the first beat of another bar that is not at the start of a system.

Some, but not all of those hairpins show up in Galley view.

I’ve read older posts including one from Daniel from 2021 stating that this is on a list to be addressed.

@floresdeberg in the thread I linked to there is also a workaround mentioned: add the hairpin to the main beat, then drag the left handle back to the first grace note using the mouse (the hairpin might disappear and reappear again during that process) and then move the right handle back using Alt+Shift+Left arrow. It will extend beyond the main note but you can then interrupt it with the ending dynamic. (How this affects playback I don’t know but I’m glad I can at least get it notated).

In my current project I have to do this a lot and it’s on a deadline, so this is quite inconvenient… let’s hope a solution is on the way :folded_hands:

Somewhat calming that I’m not the only one dealing with this :sweat_smile:

+1 on that hoping for a solution. For now, I’ve resolved to input long(er) gracenote segments as normal notes and adjusting the size. This spares me of doing any fiddling in the parts in order for the dynamics to show up.
