Grand staff with two different instruments

I’d like a player to play piano and electric organ simultaneously and would like to notate this on a grand staff with both staves having treble clef. How do I set this up? Ideally the piano part would be the upper stave and the organ the lower stave.

You can add a piano instrument, and then just add a clef change in the bottom staff to treble clef. If you want this to play back as piano and organ, you’ll need to turn on independent voice playback in Play mode and assign playback appropriately.

Thanks!

Alternatively, you could create a Player holding two single staff instruments and rename them suitably…

Then there’s no need to use independent voice playback

This approach is easier in terms of playback, but I think it also requires:

  • Editing the instrument definitions in the project to make them both 1-staff instruments
  • Disallowing instrument changes
  • Adding a bracket change

My example used two sketch treble stave instruments (renamed).
Dorcio handles the instrument change fine - if both are playing, both are shown.
Yes - I added the bracket change.

So you’d still need to wire up the second instrument to an organ sound for playback.

Right – depends whether the intent is to always have both staves showing, or just the staves that are playing.

For some reason I’m only showing the piano staff, although there are two treble staves I renamed as per your instructions.

Right, I should’ve been more careful. Thanks all!

(Hi @letku, I didn’t do much to contribute to the solution, you may want to give the solution checkmark to another post…) Edit: done, thanks.

Ok, hope it is correct now. Thanks to everybody.

One more thing: How do I make only the piano staff to show chord symbols in both the score and parts? Now it toggles both the organ and the piano on and off simultaneously.

See this:

In your situation, uncheck Rhythm section instrument from the organ Instrument, clicking on the there three dots and choosing Edit Instrument Definition…:

Dorico file example:
piano and organ in one player.dorico (1.4 MB)

I still don’t get it. Is it possible to select the lower instrument (the organ in this case) and make it not show the symbols? When I control-click on the piano or the organ in the setup menu I get the same contextual menu which affects both. Has this got something to do with chord symbol regions?

EDIT: I didn’t see your reply. Sorry.

Please red carefully what I wrote, and what I show in the screenshot. I uploaded also a Dorico file example…

Don’t right click on the player, but instead:

Edit:

I see, no problem. All set now? [I also wrongly spelled three, corrected now…sorry.]

My piano and organ seem to be in some invisible group; making a change to one affects the other. Your file on the other hand works perfectly.

This is because you used the same instrument (probably a sketch/treble staff instrument) for both, and just renaming them doesn’t change their Instrument Definition. And if you customise the instrument definition for one, it changes also for “the other” because they are the same instrument!

In my project example, instead, I loaded a Piano instrument and then an Organ Instrument into the same player: so that no renaming is necessary and they have independent Instrument Definitions (because they are different instruments). I merely edited the instrument definitions to only display one staff, as you desired.

You can change the instrument at any time:

Yes! This works perfectly now with the chord symbols. Thank you.

Glad to help, @letku.
