Hi,
I’m trying hard to understand how to produce a graphic only fermata by creating a playing technique but with no success so far. Can someone point me in the right direction as if were a kid? I just can’t find the fermata symbol anywhere.
- Go to Library > Playing Techniques
- Scroll down and click the New button
- Change the Type dropdown to Glyph
- Click the pencil edit icon under the preview window
- Click the trash can icon under the preview in the new window that opened.
- In the right-hand panel, open the Range dropdown, and find and select Holds and Pauses
- Click on the fermata you want, then click the Add Glyph button in the lower right
- Click OK to return to the Playing Techniques window
- Make any other desired changes (e.g., Name, Popover text)
- If you want to be able to apply your new technique either above or below a note, then change Appearance to “Different above and below”; click the pencil under the Below preview and repeat as needed (trash existing glyph, add upside down fermata)
- Click OK in the Playing Techniques window to exit
Thank you so much!!! I would never have done it without your tutorial.
Just adding a small detail to @asherber’s tutorial: playing techniques are not purely graphical objects. They trigger playback techniques, which affect the playback.
When you create a Playing Technique, like the fermata here, it triggers the Natural playback technique by default. This may cause issues — for instance, pizzicato passages turning back to arco, or mutes being removed, etc.
To avoid that, you can create a “blank” playback technique that you assign to the fermata (and to any custom “graphic” playing technique), which won’t override any playback technique already in use.
If you turn on the sound in this video, you’ll hear the difference.
Excellent point, @charles_piano, thanks!
I actually learned that from you! ![]()
