Grayed out option

Why is the Transpose Key Signatures option gre

yed out while in Transpose in Write Mode in Dorico Pro 6 for Mac?

I think you have to select the key signature also, and not just the notes.

Jesper

Yes, I think I also selected the key signature, but I can’t be sure because it’s in the key of C major, so there’s nothing to select. Should I attach the file?

Show signposts, and there should be one to select. If it’s really C and not atonal/No key.

Jesper

Yes, I added a signpost, selected it, and still got the same result.

If you’re transposing the whole flow, you can also leave everything unselected and transpose.

Did you select both the notes and the key sig signpost?

Jesper

It’s not terribly important for this particular file, since I’m watching the Dorico video on making exercises. In the video, the Change Key Signatures option is not greyed out. I simply want to make the second four measures in the key of Db. Then the next in D major, and so on. I’m trying to learn Dorico so that I can really graduate from Finale, so this is something I want to make use of in the future. I’ve attached the file.

Yes, thanks for doing that but please tell me how you did it.

I copied the C major signpost to each staff. Then selected the notes and C major signpost on each staff and used the Write->Transpose dialog. Entering D and flat under calculate on the first one, pressing apply, finally OK, and so on. But I think Janus will soon recommend using Shift-i instead.

Or a 3d way, without the transposing tool and without Shift+I, by using Shift+Alt+Arrow:

Can I offer a different approach?

Consider the key signature and note pitches separately (After all, the key signature simply respells the notes).

So…

  • Select your notes (ignore the key signature)
  • Then use shift-I to transpose them (you can either do shift-I t m2 to move everything up a minor second, or shift-I C M to Db M to be explicit about the scale.
  • Add the new key signature.

(Also, you can hide the cautionary key signatures. But do them all in one go when you have finished setting up all your exercises. Select all, filter>key signatures and set the hide cautionary property)

Called it.

I would do like this, following @charles_piano suggestion. Start with only the first 3 bars. Delete everything else, and set Library->Layout Options->Staves and Systems->Casting off to 3 bars per system. The select all the notes in the 3 first bars, Press R for repeat, followed directly by opt/alt-shift-up arrow to transpose a half step, then R again followed directly by opt/alt-shift-up arrow and so on. Finally add the Key signatures. Might need respelling if you want Gb instead of F#… Or using shift-I t m2 and t a1 etc… instead of opt/alt-shift-righ arrow like @Janus suggested.

Got it done. Thanks Everyone! And I removed those unnecessary cautionary key signature changes. I could have done this much quicker in Finale, but that’s because I’ve used it for over 30 years. (Old dog learning new tricks!) But I’m enjoying the process.
