Any way to snap audio clips so they compress or expand to whatever size they are snapped to? Or do we have to continue to use that bunch of knobs and wheels and a lot of trial and error to do time compress/expand in 2018?
Or am I missing something? Is there a mode for this?

If I understand your question correctly, you can right click to open your tool selection and while it’s open, left click on the arrow tool. That will give you 3 options. You can then grab the front or back of your audio waveform and stretch it to where you want it. It won’t snap to an area unless you have the snap function activated. One option will time stretch, another will stretch without changing time.
Check that your clips are in Musical Mode.
