When the name is “too big” for the assigned space, it only shows the number of the group, not the name. Is there a way to force it to show the full name?
Also, in this example, Group 3 has more space on the right (top) than on the left (bottom), because the bottom instrument has only one line. Is there a way to put it exactly in the center?
If, instead of using groups, I try to link the instruments using brackets, the marimba loses its two-staff brace. I can add the squared sub-bracket, but that’s usually for different players.
If I click on the brace on Engrave Mode, it removes the marimba from the bracket.
Second bracket appearance on Layout Options is not really an option because it would also change the Violins 1 and 2 bracket into a brace.
So, is there a way to put the Marimba into a bracket with other instruments without losing its brace?
I’d like to show the group names only on the first page and if on another page there are two instruments of the group that appear. Is that possible?
PS: if I choose “None” in “Staff labels on subsequent systems” in Layout Options, all the instrument names (not only the group names) are hidden.
Instead of using groups, another method would be to add instruments to a player.
However, when I change the player name, I am not able to make it into different lines by pressing “enter” (that works to rename the instrument, but not the player). Is there a way to do so?
If Dorico automatically sends a crash report to Steinberg at startup, it’s anonymised and virtually impossible to link it to a specific case. It’s more helpful for the developers if you create a Diagnostic Report yourself (in the Help menu), and upload it here.
In very large projects, where it can take several seconds for Dorico to complete the edits you make to player or group names, if you try to commit a second update before the first one has completed, that can result in a crash. So please wait for the first edit to complete before you try to rename the next player.
You can edit the short name for a player group, but obviously you should try to keep it short enough that it won’t go beyond the bracket’s bounds.
You cannot add a bracket to the marimba when it is already bracketed to other instruments; you can only add a sub-bracket, and specify in Engraving Options that sub-brackets should be drawn as braces, but that of course is a global option.
More flexibility for how staff labels and player group labels combine is provided in Dorico 6, if you are interested in updating to the latest version. (It’s not a free update.)
In theory I think you could create a multi-line text item in a text editor and paste it into the Rename Player dialog; it won’t show in the dialog on multiple lines, but should show on multiple lines in the score itself.
Changing the selection of percussion instruments per player (not because of Dorico but due to the project), the name of the group now appears. However, due to the one-line staves, the name of the groups 1 and 3 are not centralized. Is it possible to centralized it?
Using the player name method, coping and pasting from a text editor worked for the enter instead of spaces. However, in the part, the info after the first enter doesn’t appear.
I found a solution for that: on Setup Mode, change the name of the layout on the layout list on the right (not the players list on the left).
PS: the name of the first instrument doesn’t appear at the beginning with “Show instrument change label at start of flow”, so I had to write it with using text and adding a border (bottom menu) to make it similar to the others that appear after the first measure (although this border is a bit thinner).
Regarding the player name to appear on the score, though, it would be good if it was possible to use italics, bold etc., but I don’t think it can be done within this method.
To do so, I think the only option is editing the full name of the first instrument of the player (not the short name) and use the instrument name instead of the player name.
This might be the better option anyways, because it seems there is no option to use the player name at the beginning (equivalent to instrument’s full name) but not for the following pages (abbreviated name). It is possible to change the abbreviated name of the player, but ideally it would show the instrument abbreviated names because the instruments change. So, using player’s name instead of instrument’s name make it appear like this in the following pages (instead of showing only the name of the instrument played on that line):
One thing that I don’t think can be done (if it is possible, I wasn’t able to find out how) but that would be useful is, instead of adding new instruments using “+”, to transfer other instruments to the player.
For example, instead of adding a triangle and a suspended cymbal to the glockenspiel player then coping and pasting all the notes and deleting the other triangle and suspended cymbal players, it would be easier to just transfer the existing triangle and suspended cymbals to the player with the glockenspiel.
