Hi everyone
When I started with Dorico (at version 3) there was a great article on how to add guitar barré markings into my guitar playing techniques library. I set up some half and full barrés and defined the format of the “continuation” lines. And jolly fine they are too.
Usually! But I have a specific problem when I’m working in different voices.
Here’s the issue. I’ve attached an image of 3 identical bars of guitar music. The first is as I’ve typed it in.
The second is what I want - a barré that spans all the beats and notes.
The third is what I get. Sure I can remove the (for me superfluous) downstairs barré markings, but there’s no continuation line because the top voice only has one note.
Clearly, I have a workaround, because I’ve managed to produce Bar 2. But it was a bit of a clumsy fudge.
Is there a neat way of doing what I want?
When I use my barré indicators, since it will not link different voices, in your case I can set it to act on the 2nd down-stem voice, selecting the rest and the next minim chord …
Hi Andy
You’ve spelled out the issue as barrés not linking to different voices, which is definitely what I was seeing, and which, from a guitarist’s point of view really isn’t ideal. On a guitar, the purpose of the barré is to put different notes under the same finger, and in most cases they are, by definition, in different voices.
Your workaround is fine for this case! My own workaround was to replace the top note by two minims, put a barré indication on it, then replace the two minims by a semibreve. It works fine, though maybe it shouldn’t have left the continuation line when the two notes became one. Yours is better
Put in your barre symbol in the first voice and type Opt-Shift-Right Arrow (on a Mac, on Windows it’s probably Alt-Shift-Right Arrow).
This will extend your line to the right. Change the rhythmic grid value to determine how far it extends with each key stroke.
Glad I could help. Btw, I see your barre symbol is left aligned to the note. If you want it centered (looks better for me), you should define it as a glyph and not as text.
