Guitar harmonics notation, struggling with

HI everyone,

I’ve searched for this topic in the forum and I’ve read various threads, finding a great article on the subject by Douglas Niedt but I’m encountering another problem: why Dorico doesn’t let me put a string indicator on that G note as I could do on the other two notes?

(I’m trying to notate as I saw in a Lauro’s Vals Venezolano n.2 edition where the written note is corresponding to the position where to play and not necessarily on the real sound)

And why does proof reading reports the first natural harmonic as an error (both on iPad and MacBook version) in this second picture while the tablature shows the correct position to play it?

And why does these notes have the harmonic circle above even if harmonics tab are not checked in the property panel?

I definitely have a lot to understand about this topic…

Thank you for helping,

I think Dorico may be getting confused by the pitch - it’s trying to see how a natural harmonic can sound a “D” with the written pitch as a “G”. You can fake it by using the String Indicators on the right Techniques Panel:

Personally, I find the indicators a bit large, so you may want to scale them down (82% is pretty good).

Thank you @rpearl, this is absolutely possible but there are a lot of strange “behaviours”, in Dorico, regarding harmonics notation, and not always they’re logical…

Thank you for the workaround hint, that I’ll use for sure!

I think the issue has to to with playback. I agree that there could be some improvements. Have you checked the Node box for the Harmonics? It may be that with the correct setting (I’m thinking it’s the 3rd node…?) it will allow what you want.

I would just add that while I understand what you are doing, I think the idea of writing harmonics at the juncture of string and fret a bit problematic. I realize this is a whole can of worms, but the more I write for guitar, the more I think that showing the pitch to sound is the way to go, along with string and fret markings. It certainly makes more sense to my inner ear. That said, what you are doing has certainly been done, and guitar harmonics have been a mine field for a long time.
