I have a guitar part, tuned a half step lower. I have managed to find out how to make an alternative tuning in Setup>Players. However, when I input notes, or play back notes, I still don’t hear the guitar a half step lower. A written note “E” still sounds like an E, while it should sound like an “E flat”. What am I overlooking here?
Changing the tuning doesn’t automatically change the transposition - it just allows Dorico to correctly work out which notes go on which strings. Internally Dorico always stores notes at their sounding pitch. To change the transposition, you probably want to do something like this:
- in Edit Strings and Tuning, set “In staff notation, written middle C (MIDI note 60) sounds as” to “Cb3”
- on the Players page of Layout Options, turn on “Use fretted instrument transposition” and set it to “For notation and main chord symbols”
- on the same page, turn on “Transposing layout”
You’ll need to do steps 2 and 3 for any layouts where you want to see the transposed pitch.
