It depends where you’ve entered the hairpin. If you’ve entered it immediately after the cresc. then, yes, it should.
But I doubt that you’ve done that.
How do I automatically apply the desired dynamics?
You just have to start it earlier. It does not have to align with a note as above. You can use note entry mode and move the caret to the desired location, in this case between notes, and use the popover. You can do this for any dynamic. [This I never knew for a long time.]
