Thanks, that works, but what if I didn’t have a dynamic to paste from? Seems the only alternative would be to invoke the caret… I like the interim behavior much better.
You can move dynamics by the grid with Command-Option-arrows.

Correct, but with some combination of extending or contracting and moving, it does solve the problem, even if it is limited to just the right side…
The design is: Alt (Option) moves the whole object; Shift-Alt changes its length, from the right end. The only way to change the length from the left end is by selecting the start point and dragging. So I guess this means that your desired mouse action is once again not possible.
A further thought for a feature request: Would it be possible to enable this with drag+Alt on a handle? (Note: not Alt-drag – in other words, click-&-hold, then add the Alt key, and drag.) I got this idea by analogy with the way holding the Alt key shows the grid in the system track and allows grid-specific selection.
