Hi. I’ve just tried to input a snare drum with rolls and buzz rolls with Halion’s Snare Combi KS and it does work. However, this was not automatic since I added it in the file I’m working on, so I had to configure it manually, but this should be done automatically with a correct playing template.
What did I do? First, create a snare player, then load Snare Combi KS in HSSE. Make sure in play mode that the player is played back by HSSE, port 1 channel 1 (where I loaded Snare Combi KS). In Play mode, right panel, make sure that my Snare Combi KS has the proper percussion map (HSSE Snare Combi KS). Then, in Setup mode, Snare player’s card expanded, I change the settings for the snare instrument, add the tremolo playing technique (that triggers roll playback technique) and z on stem playing technique that triggers buzz roll playback technique, and it works.
Hope it help!
so if I change the snare drum to General Midi and do the above then I get a snare roll (although it’s quiet).
It doesn’t work for tam-tam or tambourine.
I would guess that this should be automatically sound correctly with the three slash tremolos or Z but maybe that’s hard to do. I’ve been working on solving this issue for several hours and hope there’s an easy solution.
You must first check that the sounds you want do exist in the library. If a tam tam or a tambourine does not have a specific roll sound available, this will not work, obviously, because it won’t trigger anything that’s “triggerable”. Check the percussion map for General Midi, and see which sounds are available.
[Edit] I just did that (because it’s the only way to know what’s in there) and I only find a “normal” tambourine. And no tam-tam at all.
FWIW, I built and shared the perc maps and all for the Spitfire Percussion library, where you could find all these. But we’re talking about a 350+€ library…
I did purchase the Spitfire BBC orchestra. Is this what I need? Maybe I can replace all the sounds with the Spitfire orchestra but I’ll need to figure that out. Thank you for helping!
I’m Googling the info and work on connecting my Spitfire to Dorico. It seems pretty exciting!

I’m not in front of my computer any more. Make sure you download John Barron’s expression maps and percussion maps for BBCSO. Then you only have to assign the player to the right playback vsti (BBCSO percussion), make sure you use the BBCSO percussion map (little cog next to the vsti name), and then in Setup mode, edit the percussion playing techniques so that you trigger the roll play-back technique when you input a tremolo etc
