Handling 2nd-time-through obbligato in repeated section

I’m editing parts for a typical military band march, where the trombones have an obbligato the second time through the first strain. In the original parts, the trombones have no repeat marked and the obbligato simply follows the first strain, while all other parts have repeat barlines with a 1st/2nd ending.

I’m currently handling this with a separate flow for the trombones and full score where the first strain is entirely written out without repeats, with rehearsal marks in the second time through suffixed with “B”. This seems like an edge case so I’m not holding my breath for an easier solution, but is there one?

Welcome to the Forum.

Would cue sized notes for the obbligato be too messy? If so, maybe an Ossia?

I am not sure I understand your description.

Are you saying that the trombones have rest measures in the 1st-time-through?

Generally - to avoid loosing rehearsal time due to communication problems - it is better to keep the same repeat layout in the score and in all the parts.

Trombones play both times through the first strain, but with a different melody. I thought about ossia or extra staves, but that’s messier in the score and doesn’t condense.

The point about rehearsal is well taken, and part of why I’m making sure there’s no better solution I’ve missed. I have bar number rehearsal marks at the start and middle of the first strain (5, 13); for the second flow for trombone parts, I mark the start and middle of their obbligato as 5B, 13B. The rest of the rehearsal marks line up with correct numbers across all parts as expected.

Hi @NRL, I am also not sure I understand what you need (a screenshot, at least, would help us to understand better).

But in any case: if you would like to maintain the same repeat structure in the score and that part, did you consider using a separate voice on the same (trombone) staff, for that passage, and insert text “1a volta”, “2a volta: ostinato” (or something like that) above and below, following the voice stems direction?

I tried it, but the writing isn’t very conducive to that approach:

Here’s what my attempt at an extra staff resulted in:

versus written consecutively, without repeat barlines in the trombone part:

other parts retain the repeat structure, but it’s in a different flow so I’ll have to manually sync changes to dynamics. here’s the alto sax part:

Seems to me that the two cleanest options are to either do what you’ve done and separate the trombone part, or write the repeat out for everyone. Unless you have to fit everything to a small paper for marching, I’m leaning toward the second option.

THIS!!

It’s short enough, just write it out for everyone.

Personally, I like this approach (ossia) – unless it makes it too small to read (depending on your format). Having it above the 1st pass staff, marked as “2nd time - obbligato” or similar, would be clear enough to me as a player. Just my 2⍧.
