Hangs forever after Wake from Sleep and iLok Authorization Fail

I leave Dorico opening over computer sleeping. After resuming the computer, a dialog prompted from a VST saying iLok authorization was fail. This is expected as network was interrupted during sleeping. The dialog asks me to click “OK” for something or “Cancel” to stop using the software. I clicked “Cancel”.

And then, Dorico freezes forever, even though iLok authorization has resumed later.

Could this situation be improved?

I don’t recommend leaving Dorico open when the computer is sleeping. I’ve often had issues that way though it’s true that most other apps behave properly in this situation so your request doesn’t seem unreasonable, though to me it’s not a major priority.

If you’ve got VSTs that need authorization when waking from sleep, then that’s going to be a problem.

Actually, we do have since recently a yet undocumented feature to allow for such. In a file you can specify a list of plug-ins that you want Dorico to ignore, so they don’t get scanned or displayed in the plug-in selection drop down list. The implementation on the audio engine side is already in place, it just needs a nice GUI on Dorico side in order that you can nicely create such ignore list. I need to use these VST3 plugins, that’s why the authorization dialog popups after sleeping. If I don’t use them, then they won’t be opening before my computer sleeps.

And if I don’t remember wrong, all of my VSTs need authorization when waking from sleep.

Perhaps I need an ignore list for softwares I don’t want to use, at least while sleeping. If I fall asleep while Dorico is opening, then my computer sleeps, I should expect my progress are all gone after I wake up. This is always how Dorico responds to user requests.

Are you on Mac, or Windows? On Mac, Dorico prevents sleep while it is running.

I encounter this issue while I am on Windows.

I’m assuming the computer is manually put to sleep. Dorico certainly stops automatic sleep on Windows (and won’t even switch off the screen)

Alright so the issue is specific to me…

I tried a few times that I close the lid but the computer doesn’t sleep and thus run out of battery. Then, I ran a command to disallow any application to prevent the system from sleeping, and then leading to this situation. So I have to find another way out.

Without meaning to state the obvious and you probably have your reasons, but why not just close Dorico?

There are multiple reasons leading to my pain point.

1. I want to keep my other applications from restoring when I leave my computer (the power supply would stop). But I found unknown applications were preventing my computer to sleep, so I ran a command to disallow all applications from preventing sleeping.
2. Normally I would save my work in Dorico before I intentionally leave or sleep my computer. So that was not an issue, but
3. I fell asleep while I was working on a Dorico project without saving, then my computer slept. After waking up the computer and unintentionally clicking on the “Cancel” button of the dialog, Dorico freezes, progress gone! Then, this becomes an issue, and has happened multiple times.
4. Actually, Dorico has automatic backup feature, but I found that not all changes to the VST plugins are being backup.

By the way, in the past days I used to keep Dorico opening as a habit, because reloading VSTs that taking up 80 GB memory is a heavy process, and if Dorico is not occupying this memory, other applications might take it, and causing troubles if I start Dorico and load the same project again. In the recent year, I had solved this memory issue with VEP although still having this bad habit.

I was just going to suggest using VEP but it looks like you’ve discovered this yourself. As a general rule, VEP comes back OK after sleep mode in my experience so I usually keep this open but close Dorico when putting the PC to sleep – which will prevent the potentially long library reloading time you talk about.
