In “Set Up Winsdows Layout,” the Hardware tab is greyed out. I’m trying to record using DSP, which I have done many time previously – but not for three years. I have “all channels” checked in Channel Type Filter. Any thoughts as to why this is? Could it be a driver issue? I did have to reinstall Cubase recently. I have Cubase Pro 14 ver. 14.0.41. and UR44 interface.

Yep I just went to try mine. Cubase 15 and a Yamaha UR22
Hardware option in the mixer greyed out.
I reconnected the inputs (your first screenshot) and the option become available.
On the input channel not the audio channel..
What do you mean by “reconnect”?
In the input tab. The inputs weren’t connected. I had to click and select.
But looking at your screenshot yours are connected.

Can you show a picture of where the “hardware is grayed out”? I’m not sure what you mean.
If you mean DSPMixfx window so:
Manual ur44 says:
- You cannot operate dspMixFx UR44 while a Cubase series DAW
is running. When Cubase is running, configure the DSP mixer and
DSP effect from “Dedicated Windows for Cubase Series”
A bit of a guess here.
You have downloaded and set the tools software. Basically the dedicated mixer and router for the sound card.
Cubase won’t let me take a snapshot of the “set up window layout.” You’ll just have to take my word that it’s greyed out. I’ve reloaded all drivers, but no change. For whatever reason, Cubase won’t let me access the DSP effects.
I had to do a total delete and reload of Cubase a couple of months ago. Computer died.Took a while to get everything back the way it was previously. But this is the first time I tried accessing the DSP effects so I record a vocal track with reverb, but not print the reverb on the track
Anyway, I’m wondering if I don’t need to delete Cubase and start again.
Yes, that’s what I mean – hardware tab is there, but greyed out. I have no hardware installed – unless my UR44 interface is considered as hardware.
As I mentioned, I did load the TOOLS driver for UR44. Is that the problem?
Mine is a UR22 so a little different… Cubase 15, Windows 11.

If my inputs aren’t connected Hardware greyed out like yours. As soon as I connect (screenshot 2) I get the hardware option in both the project and the mixer windows.
No, Tools and Basic suite should be installed before you install the UR44. See installation procedure for the Device. dspMixFx UR44 (Mixer) on the other side is not available when you use it as an interface in Cubase, so the dspMixFx Mixer will be grayed out if you try to open it.
UR44 is hardware, yes..

- are the CC Mode off?
- have you installed the latest drivers for UR44 ?UR44 Updates and Downloads | Steinberg
- Have you turned the UR44 on before launching Cubase ?(I do it even before I start the comp)
- I presume you’re connecting it by USB and MIDI cables?
- Have you selected the “Yamaha Steinberg USB ASIO” driver in the studio setup?
- Turn off Direct monitoring to see if that has an effect, which I can see you have enabled.
If you have made any changes through this describtion, turn off the comp and the UR44.
Turn on the UR44, and restart your comp and launch Cubase1

You have UR22C and it’s quite different from UR22 and even more from UR44. They can’t be compared really.
Thing is in my residential studio I am using two daisy chained steinberg mr816csx’s
one of the earliest of the Steinberg / Yamaha DSP hardwear interfaces.
Though there are differences the set-up of these 18 year old interfaces is very similar to the little UR22c interface I’m using in my spare room set-up.
I’m trying to use my years of experience using these hardware units to help. I’m sure the set up procedure should be the same.
But anyway I’m getting nowhere so I’ll butt out.
The set up is quite similar but the usage is not and the windows you pictures are showing is deffinitly not.
Example:
The hardwares own mixer (UR44 DSPMixer) is not available in Cubase.
At no point did I say it was. None of hardware mixer software is available in Cubase but they still have to be installed on the system though and routed correctly.
I do know what I’m taking about and
I’m finding you a bit patronising, but like I said I’ll butt out.

Tip ..The option is greyed out because it’s not seeing a correct input connection. This could actually be a setting in windows or the interfaces own software. Or of course in Cubase it’s self.
