I have a collection of hardware synths that I would like to include in my compositions. Is there a way I can get playback to to play these synths?
Yes: you can create MIDI Instruments in Play mode, and pass the MIDI output to them.
Is there a way to feed the audio back in so it shows up in the mixer?
