Harmonic Principles for Orchestration (Feature Idea)

People who disagree with you are not necessarily elitist. They may just be practical.

I think a general proof reading tool would be a great help, even if it only captured basic syntax errors.

It could capture things like

Inconsistent dynamic markings such as p > f
Gradual dynamics starting / ending where there are no notes
Repeated notes under slurs without articulations (for strings)
Notes on hidden staves.

And dozens of others…

A more complicated ‘harmonic analysis tool’ would be less interesting to me.

I would love a simple function that searched for and highlighted parallel 5ths and 8ths. Many times, like orchestration in octaves or when you want that cold, icy feeling of parallel 5ths, it is intentional. But, if there were an easy way to skim through the parallel 5ths & octaves to see if they were intentional or not, that would be very useful. A friend told me Sibelius has that function. (if it had an option to NOT show passages where orchestration is in parallel instruments, that would be even better). Just want to put in my vote to move this up in importance for the next version. I would use it all the time.

Surprised at the negative reactions to this idea. All of the proofreading features can be toggled on and off. Not interested. Don’t use it. Minor 9 intervals in big band jazz arrangements need to be intentional Personally, for this use case, I’d love for Dorico let me know when my voicings contain these.

It’s primarily a matter of “opportunity costs.”
