For a long time, I’ve run Dorico Pro 6 and Hauptwerk 7 Advanced on a MacPro and Mac OS12.7.6 (Monterey). This worked flawlessly using the vst link.
I recently upgraded to a Mac Studio M2/Max running OS26. Research shows that Hauptwerk 7 should run on this OS version, though apparently not after the next system update. However, the link shows in the Play/VST dropdown with two exclamation marks on either side, suggesting it’s missing or not functioning.
So far as I can see, the plugin is in the correct place, and Dorico VST preferences show it as loaded.
Is anyone successfully working with Hauptwerk 7 in Dorico under this OS on a Mac M2?
This is an issue with Hauptwerk’s VST and you now using Apple Silicon rather than an Intel CPU. Hauptwerk is only VST2 and Apple Silicon requires VST3. There are a couple work arounds for which I am aware:
Run Dorico Pro 6 using Rosetta (Right click on Dorico app in Applications, click on Get Info, click on the box that says Open using Rosetta). Dorico can now communicate directly with Hauptwerk.
Obtain a third party intermediary like Vienna Pro Ensemble 8 add Hauptwerk to a server file and run that file through VPES8. I’m the least knowledgeable about this one even though I now use it exclusively. I’ll upload my connection file so maybe it will work for other is they so choose.
Many thanks. It’s odd that Haupwerk 7 is stated as being compatible. Also, that the plugin shows up in Dorico 6 vst pefs. I have actually set Dorico to use Rosetta, but to no avail. Sorry, I forgot to mention that.
I have some Vienna instruments, so I’ll investigate what’s possible. Thanks for the file.
I’m guessing that the only other option is to upgrade to Hapwerk 8, which I’m not keen to do for a number of reasons. I did write to Milan about this, but I haven’t had any reply.
I’ve only used Hauptwerk 8 and 9 so maybe 7 is different for some reason. You might want to ask this question on the Hauptwerk Forum General Discussion with the hope that some clarity from other users of HW7 might occur.
If it shows up when setting VST connections in Play mode, it should connect. HW will need to be set to Hauptwerk AU/VST Link in MIDI settings for both MIDI input and MIDI output.
Understood – this is how it’s always been set and working for years. The puzzle is that Dorico accepts the plugin, displays it, but with the exclamation marks.
No response from HW support, so yes, I’m just trying the forum.
The only time I had that happen was when I thought I was running under Rosetta but wasn’t but you’ve already confirmed that you are using Rosetta so I wish you best of luck with Milan…
