Having problems finding how to convert a solo violin part to ensemble,

Hi there! I am sure there is an easy solution to this, but I am having problems because of a mistake I made early: still in the Finale refuge status so hopefully my request does not seem foolishly simple.

I am importing work I did in Finale, and set up an orchestra. However, when I created the parts, I unknowingly selected individual player rather then ensemble for the strings. Then I did some work. Now I am trying to convert to an ensemble, but am not sure exactly how to move everything from the original violin 1 to the new ensemble line. I see how to move the instrument, which moves the information, but also seems to bring the solo patches with it. So there ust be a way to quickly select all the material in the original staff and move it to the new one? Any help gratefully appreciated!

When I’ve imported xml files it almost always created a solo string player. To get a section (ensemble) player, my solution was to create a new section player in setup mode. In Write mode, select everything in the solo player part, copy it, then paste it to the new instrument. Once you have everything the way you like it, go back to setup mode and delete the solo player.

All you have to do is…
Create an empty section player (just hit <esc> at the instrument picker)
Drag the Violin instrument from the Solo Player to the empty Section Player.

Just as confirmation to David, the dragging is done in the left panel of Setup Mode (and not in the score itself).

Thank you! I had discovered a different solution, but this one is much more elegant. I am still getting used to the idea that the music belongs to an instrument that belongs to a player. This was very useful tip!

Finale doesn’t define the type of Player in its XML; but you can add the relevant data to the XML before importing.
