Hearing the keyboard and notes during and after input

I’m trying out Dorico, I have my VST working and sound coming out. I like to compose by ear. So sometimes I pull a note up and down the piano roll area until I hear it’s correct. I don’t seem to be able to do this. I’d like to know if this is or is not a feature of Dorico 6. I also can’t hear the virtual keyboard at any time. Is that always thecase? Or is it just that I have to switch something on or off? Thanks for any help you can give me. Ian Wild

Welcome to the forum.

You’re right that dragging the note in the Key Editor doesn’t seem to trigger ‘auditioning’. But dragging the note on the staff, or using Option Up/Down, should sound each pitch.

The Virtual keyboard should work if MIDI Thru is turned on (in Preferences > Play).

Thankyou for your reply. I’ll give these a go. There’s another problem in the piano roll for me and that is that after a note is moved or edited, it is orange andf then when I click on it, it is soundless. The only way I can hear it, is to click on another already existing note (which turns THAT orange and then click back on the first note. Perhaps this is related to the function keys you’ve mentioned so I’ll give them a try. Again, many thanks!

Any reason you’re editing with the Key Editor, rather than the notation directly?

It is possible to move and adjust notes in the Key Editor, but I’d argue that there’s more functionality and greater control using the main part of the app.

I read music but a bit slowly, and I’ve found using other programmes, that it’s just faster for me and less confusing to compose against a piano roll. I like to be able to hear instantly what a note is. I think in some notation systems, sharps and flats can’t be heard by sliding up and down the stave, you have to stop where the note is and then click on a sharp or flat symbol, whereas on piano roll hearing a sharp or flat is immediate.

I still can’t hear the virtual keyboard - in fact I did have midi through on. But I don’t have a midi piano plugged in.

It should just play the VST sample of the currently selected staff.

It does play the sample in Write mode. If the notes behaved in the same way in Play (piano roll) mode, I think I’d be okay. Though even in Write mode it only slides up and down in the selected key without incidentals. I’m hoping there is a solution because I like Dorico alot in many other ways. Apart from anything else it’s very clean and stylish.

Use Shift to “slide“ chromatically.

Cool, thankyou. That works well! That is really helpful. Any suggestions for getting sounds on moving blocks in the piano roll as I slide up and down?

No, sorry.

Alas.
