Help controlling audio unit effect with external midi

I am stuck trying to control a third-party Audio Unit used as an Insert Effect with an external MIDI controller. Are there any resources that can help point me in the right direction? I’m thinking I’m just missing a step.

At the moment I’m trying to get my FCB1010 footpad to control devices in THU. For example a pedal to turn on a flanger or expression pedal for WAH. If I used a Cubasis Insert Effect, controlling the effect works fine. But I’ve tried other Audio Unit effects besides THU and cannot get any to recognize any midi CC.

I am missing a step? Thanks!
