Help! Full scale digital errors—blowing out my speakers!

This keeps happening. Please help me! My ears! My speakers! Two tweeters blown so far. Mostly happens at start and stop commands. Disk access issues? My application drive is Solid State… my project drive is not. Any more clues?

Sometimes on import Nuendo will even bring in a clip with digital full scale at the end of the clip!

Could be related to routing SFX channels into a group that has a 5.1 output. Going to work at minimal volume without this group bus and see how it goes… argh…

I do suspect that N5.5.5 does not like to route a bunch of stereo and mono tracks to a group with a 5.1 output. No recurrence since I deleted that group and sent those channels directly to the output. Too bad though, since I would like to control reverb and several other things as a group here. At least if I know what it is I can save my speakers. Too late for my ringing ears.

Yes, I now change routing with speakers reduced. Seems pretty consistent. After changing a bunch of tracks outputs to be a group with a 5.1 output, I start getting glitches. Have to restart Nuendo, then things look OK. On some projects its OK, on others I can’t have these 5.1 groups at all, and have to go with direct out to the 5.1 bus. Perhaps related to having Altiverb 7 on an FX track… Not routed into the group though…

Without controller you are bound to lose a lot more speaker components and nerves.
Btw., when I encounter those noises/ clicks/ pops when starting/stopping it had often to do with DC-Offset. When removed the clicks were gone. Hint: check for DC-Offset before starting the work.
It can affect the sound.

These bursts very probably come from switching Sample Rates or hooking up gear with unstable Sample rates.

Just for your information though I’ve never had problems and I’ve never had a controller between my speakers and my sound card (Lynx TWO-B). Never had loud full-scale noise or pops or clicks. Never blew a speaker or anything. And this is on about 2-3 PCs all with the same card.

I think there’s something fishy going on somewhere in setups where this happens.

I am inclined to agree as well, and suspect a plugin may be the culprit.
I have to suspect AltiVerb because it automatically resamples when faced with a project running at a different sample rate to the IR used (if I remember correctly, that is - although I have no knowledge of AV7 as it is Mac only)

It’s definitely never happened to me, but I am on a different OS, different platform & a different AltiVerb so I may be well wide of the mark. Might be worth asking Aram at AudioEase?

I had a similar issue back in the Nuendo 3 days. My situation was that my PC was poorly built and caused it to overheat. I tried swapping the RAM, thinking it was bad memory, but I think it was a crappy Motherboard that was causing all the extra heat. I had it rigged with an AC unit that blew air directly into it. That was my workaround. Hey laugh if you want, but it worked.
