Help On File Import

I have Wavelab Pro 12 and using intel i9 iMac with OSX 15.2 Sequoia

I have issues with importing any audio file to Wavelab 12, regardless of format Wavelab keeps presenting me with the special file import menu.

Im guessing I have an issue somewhere in the Wavelab startup parameters but have no idea where to look at this point.

Any clues would be appreciated

Thanks
David

I don’t think it’s an issue with your WaveLab startup parameters.

I don’t see this message often but when I do, it’s usually from a very old audio file with weird parameters that WaveLab can’t automatically recognize, so that’s why it’s asking for your help with that.

Sometimes in these cases, another audio DAW like RX can open it and then you can re-save it as something more standardized.

The specific file is 44.1 32bit float.
It drag and drops OK into WL, just won’t import.

Tried other files and formats ie MP3 and 48K Wav but all fail to be recognised and the special file format dialogue pops up?

Interesting, maybe PG will have to look at the file itself.

When you say “import”, do you mean import into an audio montage or are you just trying to open the file in the Audio Editor?

I typically never see that pop-up window unless the file is an unusual format or contains some unexpected metadata or something out of the ordinary.

Something deeper must be going on but more info and context is needed.

Import into Wavelab file using the import menu item under the File heading.
Basic stuff. I don’t use Montage features much.

Please open with Open Menu above Import.

If you’re getting this message while trying to open the file in the Audio Editor, my guess is that PG will request more info about the file…especially if dragging and dropping works but Import from the file menu does not work.

After looking at this, try using “Open” instead of “Import” if all you’re trying to do is open the file in the Audio Editor.

Open works, but it still doesn’t explain why Import doesn’t.

My issue isn’t about getting the file into Wavelab it’s about why doesn’t Import recognise any of my standard file headers. My other audio programs appear to read them OK.

Thanks
David

PG will have to answer but I think Import is meant for other things but if you simply want to open a file in the audio editor, use the Open menu.

Import might a misleading term.

What is Import trying to do? ie Is it to identify audio file header so it can set wavelab parameters to work with it?

Clearly Im not understanding what the Import option is for. Could you clarify?

Thanks

These are the types of things you can “Import”:

I see so it can’t import standard audio files just special formats?

David

These are the types of things you can “Open”:

I think you’re thinking about the terminology differently than the intended use.

You open audio files in the Audio Editor. You insert audio files into an Audio Montage,

You Insert files into the Batch Processor.

Import is just a word used for something other than what you seem to be expecting in WaveLab.

Ok the mud is starting to fall away it’s clearly the terminology which has got me confused as Import in Cubase works differently.

I was just reading Import as being same as Open.

Thanks for assistance, Im starting to get too old for this audio editing lark lol.

I guess the question is, what are you trying to do with the file?

Listen to it? Edit it? Process it?

Either way, you “Open” the file in the Audio Editor.

Maybe PG can explain deeper as to why it was designed and laid out that way but I get the same pop-up when I try to “Import” a normal WAV file but if I use the “Open” menu, it opens in the Audio Editor and I can listen to it, edit it, etc.

Thats me. Old age creeping in, been using these things for years but I think Im now forgetting more than I remember. I recall your brain cells start dying from 40 on, so Ive had 27 years on the downward slope.

Thanks for your help Justin. Just got to see if I remember this next week.

True, in Reaper it is Insert Media Item,

in Ableton it is Import Audio File.

The dialog you showed is when you click on “import unknown audio”. This is to open files that don’t have a standard header, or have no header at all, hence the term unknown.
In the software domain, Opening a file typically means loading it in its current format for direct viewing or editing, typically saving changes back to the original file, while importing a file brings it into the application, often converting or sometimes integrating it into a project without altering the original file.
