Help on messa di voce

Hi all,

Just found a tricky situation with messa di voce.

The score:

The part:

I want them to look the same in score and part, but it seems impossible to change the inflection in the part independently from the score so that is not an option. And if I try to adjust it in engrave mode, I can change the size but not the horizontal position.

Of course I can make the right part of the mdv smaller, but I would prefer to have the same width and symmetry as in the score and just push it a bit to the right.

Can this be solved?

Hi @LAE, the larger spacing in score must be caused by some other staves’s material. And probably the beginning or the end of the message di voce is not where you want it (the crescendo is one eight long, and the decrescendo is one quarter long)?.
Can you share just that portion of your Project that shows this situation, and tell if you want the message di voce to begin as the score shows or as the part shows in your two screenshots? And how long (rhythmically) should be the cresc. and how long the decresc.?

Yes, it is certainly because of material in the other staves. Things is, that the symbol is used in a way in this music where the exact start and end of things is secondary – more important that the symbol is symmetrical.

See attached.

Hi @LAE, I tried but the spacing seems complex and to achieve a symmetrical and consistent messa di voce is difficult (between the different staves in full score, and between the full score and parts).

One alternative method that would give you the desired result would be to create a custom Playing technique with the message di voce glyph, so that it will be always identical in all places. I made it and applied it from bar 7 (duplicating the music).

It requires some manual vertical adjustment, thought, because the PT cannot automatic align with the dynamics, and some manual note spacing in Engrave mode is required, but the symmetry and the length of the glyphs is very consistent (even if the messa di voce middle point is positioned in the middle of the notehead).

You need then to draw the desired dynamic effect in the key editor, if playback is important.

Result:

Thanks Christian, that’s also a solution. I have tried it and it works sometimes, other times I need a broader symbol and then hairpins/messa di voce is the only possibility.

Ok, here another method using mdv.

First you need to make sure that all the segments of mdv are one eight long rhythmically, you can activate the system track and press alt(option) to verify the anchor position of the end points, with grid set to eight note (they will look weird and asymmetrical at first, because of the different spacings):

then adjust the note spacings where needed, to make the segments visual length symmetrical (you need to adjust this also for each part, unfortunately):

here the second step in a video:

Dorico file example (adjusted mdv from bar 7):

Brilliant! Lots of work indeed!
Maybe a way to reduce the workload could be to have them look decent in the score without fussing with note spacing, and then adjust note spacing only in the parts to make them look OK. Of course then with no care for playback.

In the end I took care of this by setting the mdv:s the best way possible for the score, then in the parts where there were problems I adjusted locally either the note spacing (in situations with p<>) or the length of < or >. I did not go into changing any note spacing in the score at all.

@Christian_R thanks again for you assistance.
