I’ve had zero issue creating multi-note tremolos until I hit upon the following problem.
I’m producing a piano reduction and can’t figure how to create a multi-note tremolo that involves tow dotted notes. The starting point is the following for excerpt Vlns. 1/2 and Vc.:
I’d like the piano to tremolo across an octave D to mimic the violin tremolo. I’d usually do this by selecting two notes of the same duration and then clicking on the appropriate multi-note tremolo icon under Repeat Structures, but this doesn’t seem to work in this particular use case. I’m sure I am doing something wrong, but what…?
I’ll give that a go, Jesper. My understanding is that Dorico treats the displayed note value as purely presentational… in other words, a note’s total duration is the same whether it is represented with a tie or a dot. Is that not the case?
Reading this, I’d like to submit a modest Feature Request, to make life just a tiny bit easier:
I’d like that the required Force Duration wouldn’t be necessary in this case. After all, the two notes are conceptually the same length already, and the tie is simply a representation following good notation practice. Changing them to a 2-note tremolo IMO removes the requirement for this representation, and Dorico could as well create the tremolo right away.
(And conversely: if you’d remove the tremolo, the ties would come back.)
I wonder if there are special cases where this would be undesirable.
I’m doing my best to embed certain conceptual ideas that underpin Dorico and instances such as this aren’t helpful, but having Jesper available to help certainly is Let’s hope that the dev team will add your suggestion to the feature request list…
