Help - What have I done? Stave collision in Engrave Mode

I’m a former Finale user and am transitioning to Dorico. Working on a project for my students and I cannot seem to fix it. Big Band template but I’ve messed something up and staves are oversized and colliding. The red box in the bottom left corner of engrave has gone as high as 290% - Any input is greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forum, @Mark2025!

It looks like your staves are too large given their number and the page size. Dorico doesn’t adjust them automatically. Go to Layout Options (by clicking on the three lines at the top right) and change the Rastral Size to select smaller staves.

If the factory sizes don’t exactly suit you, you can create a custom size.

Thanks - I made those adjustments and it’s better but still not right. I have another arrangement (same instrumentation, fonts etc) and it looks like a published chart, even with those settings the same. Wondering if there’s something else I could have messed up when poking around in Engraving mode?

Is the page size right? Is the orientation right? Landscape scores do get used in some types of scores but in general portrait is more usual…

It’s a big band score, so landscape is standard. I have another project in the same format that works fine but one changed while poking around and I clearly tapped something I’ve missed. Thanks for the suggestions.

Hi @Mark2025, maybe you deactivated Condensing from the Edit menu?

In the erroneous file, open Library Manager. Compare to the file with the arrangement that looks right, import all settings including layout options for the layout in question just to make sure you have it all the same. See if that helps!

That sounds promising. Next attempt when I have my iPad on me - thanks

I just noticed that your thread is about Dorico for iPad.
You need Dorico Pro to enable or disable Condensing (if this is the case, maybe you opened your file in Dorico Pro, and disabled condensing from there; and from there you can reactivate it).

Here the manual:

Thanks so much. I’ve got Pro (and am starting to use 5 on my laptop too) but I think it was a matter of resizing everything at once by accident and not seeing how I did it- they aren’t condensed, they’re just too big and colliding. I eventually went through and resized each stave individually and it’s better. Still adjusting from Finale and making beginner errors :man_facepalming:t3:

Thanks everyone!

You don’t need to resize each staff individually. Resizing the entire layout is changed with the space (rastral) size in Layout Option / Setup. Reset the individual staves to 100% and change the Space Size instead.
