Help with midi controller in cubase 13

Hello,
I’m hoping someone with better knowledge and Cubase experience can help me.
I have recently upgraded from Pro 11 and can no longer hear a sound when I’m using my MIDI controller/keyboard. I’m now using Cubase 13 Pro, on Windows 10 with an Q25. I’m using virtual instrument tracks.
To summarise the situation

  1. I can get sound from tracks already in a project
  2. I can get sound when I use my mouse to play the keyboard in the Key Editor, or chord pads with the VST Instrument plugins.
  3. I can ‘record’ and hear an instrument track by manually adding notes
  4. I have a meter at the bottom right-hand corner which shows midi activity when I press the keyboard (the visual scale goes up and down?)
  5. All the drivers for the device appear good
But I don’t get any sound when I play the keyboard on Instrument or MIDI in a track, or when loading a new virtual instrument!
Having trawled this forum and the internet for solutions and I can confirm
    a) Studio Setup < Audio System - the right driver is selected
    b) Studio Setup < Driver < Control Panel - the correct speakers are selected and Ports are Active
    c) Edit < Preferences < Editing < Project & MixConsole - “Enable Record on Selected MIDI Track” is checked. Record is enabled.
    d) I have set up a new project in case I contaminated something on the other project but it makes no difference; still no sound using the controller to input.
    e) I have created a MIDI track as well as Instrument track but it makes no difference- I still cannot hear a sound
Given my lack of knowledge, I’m pretty sure one of you will point out a silly set up error and I will never bother you all again … however I’d be happy to be embarrassed but back at making music.
As a newbie, I’m not certain what I can attach as a screen shot or how many… please feel free to offer any advice/solutions… and end my misery!

You should probably try enabling “Monitor” (speaker icon) on the input channel.

Hi and welcome to this forum.

When you create a new instrument track, there is a combo box containing the available MIDI Input ports. You should use the one corresponding to your MIDI keyboard (I guess it’s an Alesis Q25).

Another approach, is to go to Studio→Studio Setup→MIDI Port Setup and there check the box “In ‘All MIDI Inputs’” for the MIDI port of your controller. Then, you can set the port of the instrument track to “All MIDI Inputs”.

Many thanks, for your thoughts guys. All MIDI inputs was already set, so too was monitor. I’ve also tried All Midi as well as Q25 input in the MIDI Port setup. I just can’t understand why the midi input scale shows activity/input from the keyboard but it’s not linking as input to the HALion sonic … is there a box I haven’t ticked somewhere?

The only other thing I would say is to check the MIDI channels on the track and in the instrument match, you can also pull up the MIDI Monitor from that MIDI port setup and confirm the correct data is being sent on the correct channel.

Beyond that, for others to help troubleshoot further, it would help to see what you see: screenshots of the track with the inspector visible, the virtual instrument visible while you are inputting MIDI, MIDI input indicators visible, and maybe your MIDI Port setup screen.

Also -just to be extra sure: Check the preferences - just to be sure, that there’s no accidental filtering of input happening:

Note: In my screen capture, I’m filtering Channel 16 from reaching any tracks, because I’m using that for other stuff.

I’m am having the exact same issue and only just started happening. The VST instrument shows no midi activity , yet the midi activity at the bottom right of cubase shows activity when press a key. If i manually hit ( kick drum in groove agent for example ) i hear the the kick drum
I’ve taken a screen capture you see i hit the button it works, then watch bottom right as i play the keyboard and there is midi activity but nothing in groove agent. This is the same for all VST instruments i load in new or exisitng projects that previously worked.

So, it turns out the monitor button on the track wasn’t activated. Now interestingly, I’ve never had to activate monitoring in the past. Load an instrument and it would just work, has been like this since Cubase 5. not sure what has ( presumably by me) changed in the preferences, but something has changed. Anywho , it’s all working again.

Thank you so much for your contributions. I’ve gone and checked the filtering in preferences- but I don’t think that is a problem. Semarus, I’ve found the MIDI Monitor but there’s nothing happening there! This is a new area of cubase for me! Can you suggest what should I be seeing in MIDI monitor? I’ll create some screen shots in a minute but I’m not sure how much I can add as a newbie.

in the midi monitor the incoming midi messages should appear when you play on your midi keyboard. If nothing is happening there, this suggests that for some reason there is no midi coming into that track.

Can you download an external midi monitor (just google midi monitor) and check if this monitor is showing any activity when you play on the keyboard?

Hi Joshua,

I have managed to download MIDI-OX and yes, I can hear and see activity when I play the keyboard.

But sadly, no sounds through cubase. As requested an image including the inspector

Not sure at which channel your q25 is currently transmitting (I know that you can alter the channel by using the first “A” note on the keybed) so why not trying setting the midi channel to “Any” instead of “1”?

Thanks, will try.

Sorry. No sound despite changing setting to any. I noticed the button for input transformer. Antone know what that is about and whether I need to fiddle with this?

Hi.

Try this:

No more midi input recognized by Cubase 13 PRO - Cubase - Steinberg Forums
