HELP with smart MIDI control automation

Hi all,

I want to use my MIDI pedal to control several parameters on one plugin, or on different plugins. And that could be with different polarities, eg pushing up to increase distortion but reduce delay. And with different ranges, the pedal 0-100 could be 20-80 on the distortion and 40-0 on the delay for example.

Is there something that exists doing that as a MIDI control plugin ? I cannot see that in Cubase.
Ideally I would want the REMOTE control to be able to have that type of functionality so adding this as a FR.

Edit : I’ve seen Blue Cat RC, seems a possible solution, but I’d really prefer Steinberg to have something built-in, I prefer practical functionality and UX as a reason to buy upgrades.
Thanks for any additional tips and pointers !

Have you explored using Modulators?
Another available option would be to use a 3rd party solution such as Waves Studio Rack which would tick all the boxes and is free.

I like Modulators but I think they can’t route MIDI from my pedal to plugins, especially multiple plugins.

I love using Studio Rack and indeed it would do the trick. The issue is it seems to cause instabilities on my system, I posted previous crashes with it. Very unfortunate because it is such a powerful system for megachains and macros.

I’d love a Steinberg version of it built-in right inside Cubase and linked to MIDI Remote Controllers too, so that there is a better workflow of signal from MIDI controller to Cubase Control System to controlled plugins. @Matthias_Quellmann

I don’t have a lot of experience with Modulators, but I think the approach would be to use something like the Macro Knob and control that with MIDI Remote or Quick Control.

Sounds very interesting, I will try this tomorrow morning, thanks a lot !

Tonight I figured out :

  • Amplitube does not load in Studio Rack (yes it’s vst3 and yes it’s mad)
  • BIAS X does not allow for automation or control (totally insane overlook on their part)
  • Luckily the wonderful @Norbury_Brook on this forum recommended AudioGridder and I was able to safely load Waves StudioRack inside it, load NI Guitar Rig and create a macro to control SEVERAL plugins parameters with ONE StudioRack knob, controlled by my MIDI food pedal. VERY HAPPY :star_struck:

Cheers guys ! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Check out Blue Cat Audio’s Patchwork. In the “Params Map Editor” “it is possible to customize the channel, control numbers, range and response curve used for eachparameter” (from the manual). So, you can create a row of controls and then map them to any parameter of any of the plug-ins hosted, then move the controls by MIDI, and you can do this either in the standalone version or in the VST3 plugin version inside of Cubase. Oh, and it can also host VST2 plug-ins and act as a wrapper if/when Cubase goes VST3-only …

Hi I tried and it works :star_struck: though it’s a frustrating UX :

  • had to switch the Studio Setup Legacy Track QC settings back on as the new MIDI Remote script would NOT see the Expression Pedal input on CC11
  • The Macro knob UX is not terribly intuitive
  • No way to control the range of the pedal assigned to the Macro knob, has to be done via the actual manufacturer, shame there isn’t a range input control

Overall it works so I’ll be able to use my foot pedal to control several parameters from several plugins at once.
I really warmly thank you @mlib for taking the time to reply as this has given me a powerful solution for my setup. I’m happy ! I’ll be happy to help you back or pay it forward ! Wish you a great day :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:
