Help with unfreezing tracks in Cubase Artist 11 Please

Hi,

I recently had my project crash during an Mp3 export stating a CPU overload. And so, following advice I later went through the process of freezing some of the tracks I ‘thought’ I was sure of. I then rendered those same tracks to audio to further save on CPU.

Now further down the line I have run into some challenges, and I need to start from scratch in terms of levelling, gain staging and processing all the channels. This means that I now need to have more control over the tracks I froze.

But, I cannot seem to find a way to reverse the freezing process, and all the advice online seems to presume that I am using the latest Pro version of Cubase for the required steps, which I am not. I was able to use this process in Cubase Artist 11, and so one would imagine that the reversal process should also be possible in the same version, otherwise, I would have liked to have seen a warning that freezing is permanent once the process is used?

Please could someone explain the steps needed to unfreeze my tracks using my version of Cubase if possible, so I can avoid having to go back to a really early project save?

Thanks,

Cliff

Hi,
here’s the Cubase Artist manual on freezing/unfreezing tracks.

Don’t worry, freezing a track is not permanent or destructive, you can definetly unfreeze your tracks again in Cubase Artist.

If you encounter any problems please share at which step the unfreeze process didn’t work - I am sure that there’s a solution to your problem :+1:

Here’s another manual for Cubase Artist 11 - it shouldn’t be too different from the previous one.

Hi Reco29

I promise, I always do my research before deciding to post. because most answers are thrown up by google or you tube. And I know one should always consult the manual, it’s a bit difficult to focus when your stressed in your workflow I find.

However, having said all this, I did try to sort it following your advice, and things got a little confusing. The selection for freeze/unfreeze is not available in the /edit/ drop down menu, and clicking on the little freeze icon in the inspector window only presents you with the original option to freeze the track all over again even though you are already in a frozen state.

So I went with that and opted to refreeze, and only then was I presented with an option to unfreeze using the same little icon because it had turned orange. Still nothing was shown in the /edit/ menu.

After this, I was then able to enable and unlock the track from the /edit/ menu getting it back to a functioning state. However this seems a little strange as a process, and means that unfreezing is a bit tricky in this version of Cubase (I think)

The bottom line is, I think I may have to try to upgrade to the pro version sometime soon. :slightly_smiling_face:

Thanks again,

Cliff

Hi Cliff,

that sounds like there’s something wrong - it shouldn’t behave that way although you’ve found a workaround in the meantime.
Do you see the same behaviour in other C11 projects? Does it still happen with preferences disabled?

Cubase offers so many features - it is really difficult if not impossible to know them all. And being in the middle of a project, one usually doesn’t start to read the manual from cover to cover - I’m with you!
What I’d suggest and this is not meant as an offense in any way: Check out single aspects in between projects like Zoom, Transport, Automation, Channel Visibility - pick anything - and jot down a few notes. You will gain a lot more than you invest in the long run. I still do it and Cubase keeps on surprising me…

Let us know if this unexpected behaviour does not only occur in this specific project, please.
