Hide a condensed rest in pickup bar

Just realized I didn’t have “Show Cues” enabled. Now the cues show in the score, but I still can’t get the parts to condense.

Can you post a cut-down version of your project? Just the first couple of bars, with those instruments?

Here you go.

I was thrown off at first by the fact that condensing isn’t enabled in the full score layout in the file you uploaded.

Interestingly, the flutes condense in the Conductor Score layout, but not the Full Score layout.

While playing around, I did once get the flutes to condense in the Full Score, but now I can’t reproduce it. Maybe someone else has an idea.

I think it’s because of the cues. The Conductor Score layout has unselected show cues, but the Full Score layout has it selected.

Yes, I can’t get the cues to condense either.

If you unselect “show cues,” the flute staves will condense. However, I get a half rest in the Flutes pickup bar and I would like to hide that in the score.

Then you’re back to the start of the thread again.

Jesper

Yeah, although it looks like Aaron got it to work in post #19 above.

Let’s hope he can reproduce it.

Ah yes, of course!

It looks like Dorico doesn’t consider a pickup bar with just rests to be empty. If I start a new project with a 4/4,2 pickup and turn off “Show bar rests in empty bars”, the half bar rest still displays. This makes sense, because otherwise there’s no indication that the bar only has 2 beats rather than 4. In galley view, you can set these rests to be transparent – but they still show up in page view with condensing on.

(My post #19 above worked because I was just using 2/4 to see if condensing worked with cues – I didn’t realize that the pickup was significant.)

So if you really don’t want that half rest to display in your score, you’ll need to resort to some form of trickery. Personally, even though you’re hiding rests in empty bars, I agree with Dorico’s logic that the pickup bar needs its rest, for clarity (even though there are instruments with notes that show how many beats are in that bar), and would just live with the slight aesthetic irritation.

(And sorry this went round in circles a bit. I should know better than to look into a tricky issue while working on my own project at the same time!)

No worries, thanks for trying!

Don’t know if this might work.
Instead of cues, copied the first piccolo bar and made it cue size with a staff text for picc.

Sorry, here’s a version not showing the piccolo in the condensed score.

I see you took off the accent on the third note. For a cue, that’s probably fine. Thanks so much for this suggestion. I can make this work! It sure would be nice if Dorico gave you the ability to hide rests in condensed staves, though!

Indeed, maybe the Hide notehead in Engrave mode properties could be Hide Note or Rest. Yes, I couldn’t get rid of the accent otherwise.
