Thanks for the update on this one Daniel - will look forward to this feature being added. In the meantime, loving everything about D4. Keep up the great work!
I am running into an issue where I would like to change the place where the instrument change occurs. It seems to me that the conductor and the player need to that information at different times. I’m encountering a passage in pg. 5 of my score where the Ob. 2 finishes playing and immediately in the next bar an instrument change label (“muta in Cor. ingl.”) appears with a key change as well, of course. The English horn, however, does not play until pg. 9 in the score, leaving me with 4 full pages of an empty English horn staff that is completely unnecessary and clutters the layout. In this case I understand the player being given ample warning in their part, but it makes the score clunky and frankly doesn’t help the conductor at all. This is one of those cases in which it would be nice to be able to determine when this label happens independently in the score and the part. Just my two cents.
As always, thanks for lending an ear to all our concerns (sometimes founded sometimes not).
May I add my voice to this plea, please? How about adding an option of hiding the To Frizbee in Ab text, with separate switches for score and part? It would also be nice to have the ability to specify where the signs should appear, if not hidden.
If one doesnt need playback, one can use Shift-X text for just the change. In the case of horns (which sometimes change crooks many times), this would allow condensation.

A new idea on this field: “To x” and also all instrument names changes can be “hidden” by changing their Y-position in Engrave mode. Set, for instance, Y-position to 1000, out of the page. You can bring the text back by selecting full measure content (via System Track) and resetting position.
I hope it helps.
This helps if you aren’t using key signatures. If you’re using key signatures then the change of key will still be too early, which is potentially more confusing than if both the key signature and the instrument change text are too early.
You can work around the key signature issue though. It’s a pain and it involves key signature math, but as long as the key signatures always match (using independent key sigs), then Dorico won’t show the key change until the entrance.
If I have this in Galley …
… then I have this in Page …
… and this in the Part
Easy fix to remove/hide the “To X”:
In Engrave mode select it, open the panel at the bottom, hide prefix and enable custom text. Input a space in the text field. And it’s gone!
This is exactly my use case! (Only for a musical, but it’s the same idea)
I’ve been using “one player with multiple instruments” to model different characters, as as mentioned, changing the character usually shouldn’t create a new system. The change is usually written simply as the character name.
This generally works well to automatically switch the character mid-system:
, and also automatically use multiple staves when needed.
But there are a couple of problems with that approach (edit: I’ve realized that should probably be a different topic, so I opened one here: Handle characters/roles in a vocal piece better (feature request))
