Hide Ornament?

Is there a way to hide an ornament so that it plays back, but doesn’t display when printing? I want to add a flip to a phrase (found in jazz ornaments), but it won’t playback automatically. I discovered that putting a shake over the pitch instead (confusingly labeled as a “jazz turn” in the ornaments area) plays back pretty close to the effect I want.

So what I’d like to do is display the Flip ornament but have that phrase playback with the Jazz Turn effect. Possible?

Thanks,

Dave

This is normally done with other ornaments not supported by Dorico by simply, “Add Staff”, copy the measure to that staff with the correct sounding ornament then suppress playback on the measure you want to look correct. Then, before printing/publishing, Remove Staff will remove the staff but retain the playback of that staff.

What instrument and library is this?

There’s no built-in way to hide the ornament, so you’ll have to change its opacity to 0%, or make it 1% in size.

Ben, I’m using Atomic Big Band Horns for the instruments at this point. It’s a line in a sax soli. In the 2nd measure I want the “flip” or “turn” to be played.

With the Flip ornament as notated above the playback doesn’t change at all (not a fan of the symbol for the flip, by the way, it looks different from what I’m used to seeing). If I replace it with the shake symbol (which when I hover over it it gets called “Jazz turn”, that’s weird too) it plays back pretty close to how I want it to.

I suspect that the playback effect here is a happy accident in that the shake effect happens to be at the right speed in the context of the tempo and line that I wrote. That ornament definitely plays a shake on longer notes.

Here’s the audio where I put the “Jazz turn” (actually a shake) over the finale note of this phrase, for clarity.

Since I’m writing for live musicians my playback demo doesn’t need to be perfect, so it’s not worth too much effort to get this happening. The easiest workaround I can think of is to simply have a separate file for my demo, but I was hoping it would be easy to display the flip ornament and have the “Jazz turn” (actually a shake!) ornament hidden, but affecting the playback.

I’m not familiar with how to change the opacity or size of an ornament. Once that is done, how hard is it to find it again so that I can edit that again, if needed?

Thanks,

Dave

Hey Dave,

Yes, you can achieve everything within a single Dorico file. Here’s how:

  1. Add the ornament you want to display, as you did initially, and then turn its playback off in the properties panel.
  2. Create a second voice and add the same note with the ornament you want to hear. Then, as Ben suggested, you have two options for hiding this ornament: either set its color opacity to 0% or set the custom scale to 1%.
  3. Finally, hide the stem and remove the rests of this second voice to make it appear as though nothing is there.

If you’re unsure how to do any of these steps, feel free to ask! You can still select the hidden playback ornament by dragging the mouse to create a selection where it was placed—it will appear selected.

Here’s a video demonstrating the steps I followed.

Best,
Arnau

Even easier. Add a staff above. Notate the ornament there and then Remove that staff.
