Hiding chord symbols in Dorico

Greetings,

Older revisions of Dorico simply “grayed” the symbol name when setting the property to “hidden”. This had no effect on vertical spacing of the composition.

The current version of Dorico changes chord symbols to “flags”. This changes the vertical spacing of music compositions and wreaks havoc with a layout that was previously reviewed and approved.

Can you please return to previous behavior where “hidden” chord IDs DO NOT affect the vertical spacing of a music composition.

Thank you,
Tamra Perez

The signposts that appear when a chord symbol is hidden do not affect the vertical spacing of music in Dorico.

If you’re seeing something different, can you upload a small project that demonstrates the issue?

Edit: I assumed you meant that the signposts, which often sit higher up than the chord symbols, were forcing staves/systems further apart. But I think it’s possible that you meant the opposite: That grayed out chord symbols kept a certain distance from objects above, but signposts do not, allowing staves and systems to move closer together. I’m not familiar with hidden chord symbols appearing grayed out, so hopefully someone who knows more than me will chime in.

I don’t think this has ever been true. From the Dorico 1.2 Version History:

Perhaps you were hiding them by changing the opacity, which would then still affect the spacing as the chord symbol technically was still there and not hidden. I didn’t start using Dorico until 2.2, but I don’t ever recall hidden chord symbols being grayed out.

Or maybe you were turning on the Suppress Playback property? That also turns chord symbols gray.

Are you maybe thinking of Finale? Finale turns them gray but they still remain visible on screen. Gif below:
