I know how to set system breaks to change the sizing for staffs in a system. I know how to hide an empty staff across the project.
Is there a way to hide an individual staff in a single multi staff system? If I set up a project ahead of time with the system breaks predetermined for the empty measures, I have to put notes in at the beginning of each system so they stay visible. I would like to hide systems as I go along rather than set it for the entire project
Same thing for resizing. I want to know how to resize any staff within any single system .
Resizing in between system breaks affects all the staves in the system. Supposing I just want to resize one of the staves in a system?
You cannot resize just one staff for one system – you can change the size of a player’s staves throughout the layout (select something in that staff, right-click, and choose a new size from the Staff Size menu), but this will affect the size of the staff in every system, not only in one.
You can control which staves are visible in every system if you wish (though you’ll be doing a lot of extra work, and in general I would recommend simply writing the music for the instruments as needed in galley view, and then switching back to page view to check that Dorico has hidden empty staves in each system as expected). You can do this by creating a manual staff visibility override at a system or frame break:
@viddavisda , welcome to the Dorico forum!
as addition to what Daniel explained:
There is a way you could get different Staff sizes for one instrument, even in the same flow.
If you use two instances of the same player, you can give one of them the Staff size of 100% and the other one the Staff size of, let us say, 80%.
Then put the music exactly where you need it and use either automatic or manual Staff Hiding/Showing.
Could you explain in more detail how to set up two instances of the same player? Does it work like this - there would be two staves (two players) that are assigned to the same instrument (violin for instance), each system would be scaled to its own size, and the music is split up so that one of the systems contains music while the other is empty in the corresponding measures so it could be hidden. Please tell me if this is correct.
Thank you for the link to Manual Staff Visibility dialog.
In Setup Mode, duplicate your Player (this should also include the music).
Make sure that both of these Players are in the same Layout. And then use the Manual Staff Visibility dialog to show where you want the smaller-staff-Player to be shown instead of the normal-staff-Player.
Dave, to emphasise @DanielMuzMurray I’ll describe it a bit more in detail.
You will probably have input all music into player xy.
In Setup Mode, select player xy and right-click. In the context menu select “Duplicate Player”. The duplicate player will not have musical content yet.
Suppose you want to use the second player for the smaller staff, change to Write Mode, Galley View. Go to the bars where you want the music to be displayed in a smaller staff. Select this music, then (right-click) Move to Staff below. (Btw. I have setup a short-key for this operation.).
The rest you can do in Engrave Mode, change the staff size of second player xy, setup the visibility of the staves as described above. Finally, if you have not done at the beginning, go back to Setup Mode and (on the right) go to the Part Layout of Player xy and add the second player to it. This is to make sure, you have all music in that part layout. Rename it, if necessary.
[edit] to add to your second question. To manually hide and show it doesn’t matter whether there is music in those staves. So one has to be a bit careful to not hide anything essential. It is therefore best to work from back to front. Only if you want to you use Layout Option->Vertical Spacing->Staff visibility->All systems, to say the automatic option, you have to care to have empty staves at those places.
