Still a newbie. I have just imported a five part MXL file into Dorico 5. It was reasonably succesful. Before i didy up, I want to hide some parts. I thought this was easy (and it probably is) but I have been unable to find it.
I don’t know what terminology, part, voice, staff, staves…
Could someone please explain
All the talk online is about empty staves. These staves are not empty. I just want to be able to see an organ part (bass and treble) and a bass part (bass clef only). This was easy in Cubase Score - you just selected the appropraite MIDI tracks, I can’t seem to find a way here.
Thank you for the replies everyone. Thius is not working. I might note this is an imported MXL file with many parts. I notice that there are other flaws in the import . Playback is weird. Mute and solo buttons behave wrongly, the track speeds up and slows down for no good reason. There is a line connecting the staves
Yes I saw this and I can select a SINGLE part here, but what I want to do is select three parts. This drop down only allows one part. I want Bass and Treble for the Organ Part, and a bass guitar part. For some reason weirdly Dorico is currently treating the bass and treble clefs of the organ as two parts.
The dropdown controls what is displayed in the window. The side and bottom panels control what is wired up.
If you want a layout (part) that shows the organ and the bass guitar:
In the right hand panel, click the Add Instrumental Part Layout button on the bottom; notice that the new layout in the panel is bright blue, indicating that it’s selected
Notice that the flow in the bottom panel has its checkbox checked, indicating that this flow will be a part of the new layout
In the left hand panel, check the boxes next to the two organ players and the bass guitar player.
If you want to see what this new layout looks like, select it from the dropdown in the top bar
If you only want to show just these parts temporarily to do some work on them, you can also use instrument filters
For other issues, you may want to change the instruments to make sure they’re correctly identified as that type of instrument.
Whether barlines join staves generally follows the bracketing, which you can change in Library > Layout Options > Brackets and Braces.
If you search the forum for something like “xml fix up” you should find existing threads with various tips about how to make sure imported files behave the way you want.
Thank you, at last I have done this, though it has taken all day. Thank you for your insights. This is such a simple process in Cubase Score, you simply select the tracks and view them in Notation - this ikn Dorico is far from intuitive. It’s a three step obscure process. I am finding Dorico a real struggle. Yes I have watched a lot of videos. I need to make music, not struggle like this. I am sure Dorico is good but after a baptism of fire.
I really don’t know what I am doing. Still unsure about Dorico terminology. In this particular case, all I wanted was to make the PDF I had editable. I am trying to develop a way to create an editable score from a set of changes - such as one finds on the internet, for classic numbers. I write out the form, but sometimes its good to put a lick into notation, or alter the number of choruses.
I read fast through this thread… What I can tell you is that it is easy and fast to do what you need in Dorico, but you need to learn how to do it first!
Have you gone through the Dorico First Steps pdf? It will take you twochours but save you weeks of frustration
