I have a narrator part with mostly empty measures. When I try to hide the whole rests in empty measures, Dorico hides all of the whole rests in empty measures for every part. I have tried coloring the rests but now that I am creating parts, I would have to color all of theses rests in every part.
Hiding bar rests in empty bars is in Layout Options, so it applies to individual layouts (and to every instrument in that layout).
It’s not clear to me where you want these rests to disappear. It sounds like you want them to disappear in the score layout. Do you also have the narrator part appearing in instrumental part layouts, and you want the rests to disappear in all of those layouts as well? Is there a standalone narrator layout?
Thank you. I want the rests to disappear in the narrator part. I did try hiding the rests in layouts for the narrator part. They are erased in a separate Narrator part but they still appear in the full score. I am writing for string quartet and narrator and I want every sing part to also have the narrator’s text. The rests are present in these duo parts too. If I hide the rests in Layouts then the rests in the empty measures of the string parts also disappear.
You can use the Suppress rests feature, which actually is switching Starts voice and Ends voice properties, and those properties can be limited to a layout or can be global, but they also can be propagated to certain layouts, in a more granular way…
It’s Edit > Remove Rests in the English version. And it can only be applied globally (that is, in all layouts in which the narrator part appears). It also may not give the desired result in parts with multi bar rests when there is a single bar rest.
@Trevor_Weston If you’re hiding rests by changing their color or opacity/alpha channel, this should work as long as you have Set Local Properties set to Globally at the time you change the property.
You could also use Edit > Propagate Properties if you’ve already set the color with this set to Locally.
Great! I think I will just use the edit Remove rests.
Another solution could be to fill every measure with a single note (a whole note in 4/4 would be convenient if the time signature seldom changes) and then choose the staff, suppress playback, and hide all noteheads and stems.
Of course, if some measures do have notes. You would skip applying this technique to those or recover them after applying the solution to the entire part.
