How do I create repeat this repeat ending scenario?

I have a piece where I want verses 1,3, and 5 to use ending 1 and verses 2 and 4 to use ending 2. There is a chorus that goes after vs 2 and 4, that’s why the 2nd ending. I thought there was a way to do this in Dorico, but I’m not finding it. What am I missing?

Thanks so much in advance for any help!

Go to Engrave mode. Select the first ending. Open the properties panel, activate the Times played for segment box and enter “1,3,5”. The 2nd ending will automatically have “2,4” in that box. You can also insert custom text to get exactly the look you want in the endings.

I think you have to set “No. times played” to 5 before you change “Times played for segment”.

There are also more somersaults to go through if you want this to play back correctly!

Thanks! Could you elaborate on the “somersaults”?

Thanks very much, James! I’ll give it a try.

Here’s one way of doing it; maybe there’s something neater.

Repeats.dorico (484.5 KB)

In addition to setting up the repeats as @JAMES_GILBERT suggests:

  • Add a DS at the end; change Custom Text to D.C. and set Marker Index to 1
  • Add a Segno at the start and set Marker Index to 1
  • Add a DS al Fine just before the end, then move it (in Write mode) to the end; set Marker Index to 2
  • Add a Segno just after the start, then move it (in Write mode) to the start; set Marker Index to 2
  • Add a Fine at the start of the 2nd ending, then move it (in Write mode) to 1/32 earlier
  • Hide all the repeat markers except for the DS that looks like D.C.

Personally, I think that ending inside the first ending looks a little odd, since you’re ending at a repeat sign. You might consider, for example, a separate 5th ending, even though it’s duplicating the material of the first ending; that way, you would end at the final bar, and you wouldn’t need any of the DS/DC/segno/fine.
