Is it possible to reassign the folder location for the cache files in Cubase 12 pro.
I would like to assign it to my cache drive, unless it’s not necessary.
Just curious: Are you trying to solve an identifiable problem?
Because I’m hard pressed to imagine a reason for doing that - unless one is running a quite ancient storage setup (e.g. IDE disks).
Hi Nico5, thanks for responding…
The reason is because I also have Davinci Resolve.
When I had issues with it choking, a learned that it responds much faster when you place the cache on a seperate SSD drive.
which I did. And, which made an obvious difference.
So I thought it might improve my latency in Cubase.
I know there are lots of ways to improve latency, and I’ve done many.
Just trying to squeeze out a bit more, if possible.
Are you seeing the Cubase performance meter spiking on disk access?
If not, what makes you think that any of your Cubase latency issues are related to SSD bottlenecks? I’m asking, because that seems to be quite rare these days.
I generally try not to mess too much with Cubase (or other software) defaults - unless I have an identified bottleneck. Simply because non-standard setups are a lot less well tested and make troubleshooting, re-installation, updates and such more painful.
So for example, just to distribute SSD access, I use a very simple scheme:
- SSD 1: (Windows C Drive): Windows, Cubase, VST3 folder
- SSD 2: Cubase Project folders
- SSD 3: Sample libraries - for those libraries that specifically/easily support selecting user chosen library locations. (e.g. Steinberg, Native Instruments, Spectrasonics, Spitfire Audio, and many more).
However that’s simply because I’m using 3 SSD’s. I’d have little concern with everything being on a single good quality SSD.
For SSD’s with a lot of writing, it can be worthwhile to use SSDs that come with manufacturer supplied caching. That could be on the SSD itself or via a proprietary utility program, that uses the computer’s regular RAM as a write chache. I’ve seen such software for Windows for Samsung and some of the newer Solidigm SSDs’ - not sure if others have that.
Can you give an example of what such a cache file might be? I haven’t heard this term yet in conjunction with Cubase.
I won’t worry about it unless I need it.
Thanks for the info!
Check this google search: what is cache in cubase - Google Search
It’s loaded with information.
If you need more guidance, write back…
The search reveals several possibilities for a cache. As you mentioned DaVinci Resolve I could assume that you mean the thumbnail caches for video files. But now I would have to confirm this with you.
You coud have just written “thumbnail caches for video files” instead.
I wish you good luck with getting help here on the forum.
I’m glad I could help you with your question.
