How do I place system objects in specific locations?

I have a concert band. There are two brass sections in this orchestra. How do I make the system objects appear above a specific brass section, rather than above a random one?
The Layout options have the word “Brass”, but if I select this, the system objects will be displayed above the wrong brass section that I need.

Well, it’s not random. Dorico will position system objects above the first bracket for the instrument families that you select in Layout Options – so if you choose Brass, it will position them above the first brass instrument.

If you’ve got two groups of brass instruments and you want the system objects to appear above the second group, then you can define a new instrument family in Library > Instrument Families and add to it the instruments in your second group. (If the second group has the same instruments as the first, you’ll need to define duplicate instruments, so that one can be in the Brass family and one can be in your new family.)

Once you’ve set up this new family, it will appear as one of the choices in Layout Options for display of System Objects.

Here’s a sample file. What I did here was define a new Brass 2 family, but I didn’t put any instruments in it. Then I went into the Instruments dialog and made copies of the 4 brass instruments and put those copies in the Brass 2 family instead of the Brass family. I also adjusted the names of those instruments to remove the word “Copy”.

Finally, I set the Layout Options for the full score to show system objects above Brass 2. (And they show above the woodwinds at the top by default.
