How do I render in place outboard gear on my bus tracks? (Groups)

I have Cubase 13 Pro, been using for a long time. I just got some new outboard gear I want to use for my projects. I am confused on how to render outboard gear (such as my new 500 series compressor) on my group busses. I know how to render the tracks but I want to render all of my tracks for a certain bus together. For an example, I have 3 recorded kick microphones for drums that are routed to a group KICK bus then sent to a Drum Bus then to the Stereo Out. How would I render or bounce my compressor (everything in mono for kicks) the group track, not individual mic tracks.

If you define your hardware compressor as an “External Effect” in Cubase (audio connections) you would drop it into an insert slot on the channel of your choosing.

For the actual renderring you don’t have to change anything at all. Cubase will automatically render everything in realtime.

That’s the thing, I have it all setup and ready. I used the compressor and really like the tone of it and I wanna commit. However, is there a way to render in place onto the bus (group) as I would like to use this same compressor for other tracks or busses in the project.

Yes, the same way as if it were a software plugin. Where do you get stuck?

Kinda. You can’t use Render In Place on a Group Channel directly. RIP is for Events/Parts only.
To use Render In Place you would have to select all Events or Parts that feed your group channel and choose complete signal path. This will create a new Audio Track with the render.

I find it more intuitive to use Export Audio Mixdown and choose the Group Channel under Channel Selection. Under “After Export”, choose Create Audio Track.

The end result should be the same with both approaches provided that the selected events in RIP match the region chosen for the Export.
RIP does have a setting for muting the source events after completion but in your case you probably want to completely disable the tracks feeding your Group Channel.

The way I see it, Render In Place is good for single events or shorter regions on single tracks. For bus outputs or entire tracks, Export Audio Mixdown seems more appropriate.
