How do professional arrangers and copyists find work today?

Hello everyone,

I’ve been working for many years as a drummer, drum teacher, arranger, and composer, and I use Dorico extensively for both educational materials and arranging projects. My main focus is jazz, big band, and drum-related educational content.

Lately, I’ve been thinking more seriously about the business side of arranging and music preparation, and I’m curious how other arrangers, copyists, and notation professionals find new projects and clients these days.

I’d be very interested to hear about your experiences:

  • Do you mainly work through publishers?

  • Personal contacts and recommendations?

  • Music schools, bands, orchestras, or ensembles?

  • Specific websites or platforms?

  • Any other approaches that have worked well for you?

I’m not looking for shortcuts—just trying to understand how professionals in this field build and maintain a steady flow of work.

I’d appreciate any insights, experiences, or advice you’d be willing to share.

Thanks in advance!
