How do you make stem direction default to up on a single line instrument? (Elements 6)

Dorico Elements doesn’t have ‘Engrave Options’ so is my only option to manually flip all of the stems?

If you put in a second voice onto the same staff, the first voices stems will flip up automatically.
If you leave it with one voice per staff, you will only need to flip the notes from the middle line and upwards. All other stems will be pointing up by default anyway..

This should work (2 steps):

  1. Select All (either via Edit menu or keyboard shortcut)
  2. Press F (this will flip the stem direction of all selected notes - it will probably flip the position of other things such as slurs, so you might need to de-select those before flipping, or work in sections).

Seems voices don’t work with percussion. If I add a voice, I see this plus symbol but the notes stay downward

I’m just not sure why Dorico is ignoring this stem direction setting. I feel like I’m clearly missing something

I appreciate the solution. The problem is that my project is littered with sticking notation. I would really prefer the notes to write as stem up from the start

[EDIT: sorry I didn’t see that you are using Elements]
Hi @drumalldayy, [in Dorico pro] there is an Engraving Option for that

Engraving Options>Percussion>Single-line percussion>Default stem direction:

As @k_b mentioned, the voice direction in the Edit percussion kit dialogue will be applied only when there are instruments with different voice directions, so Dorico knows what to do in this case. With single-line percussion, the global engraving option will be used (in Pro).

Edit: setting the single unpitched percussion instrument into a kit, and checking it as Drum set and the layout option visualisation as grid (or 5-lines staff), the defined voice direction will be maintained, also in case of a single instrument in the kit, as @drumalldayy shows in the post here below.

Gotcha. Appreciate the help!

You all got me in the right direction. I found a work around. I’ll type it out for any other Elements user that might stumble onto this problem

  • Right click the player in Setup and combine instruments into a kit:

  • Edit the kit and check the drum set box in the top right

  • Make sure that Grid Mode is selected in Layout Options > Percussion

Stems should be the desired direction now

Thank you drumalldayy for putting so much effort into finding a solution for the Elements users. I hadn’t even realised you were talking about drum notation…
Glad you got it sorted.:check_mark:
