How do you manage versions of your recordings for a song?

Imagine you sing (or let sing/play) a piece and you are not happy with the performance.
Currently I create a second audio track right below the recording track and move recordings I think they’d need to be repeated down to the “parking lot”. The tedious task here is that I do need to write down the auto-generated number somewhere to keep track what characterizes that piece.
After the recording session I 'd rearrange for the best fit.
I wonder if that can be done any better?
Thanks for your recommendations!

I use the track lanes and when I am done I audition and keep the best parts from each take easily using the comb tool.

I generally use lanes for different iterations of the same performance, and track versions when I’m doing something quite different (like different harmonies or structures).

Same here. But I will go to a new Track for things like a new secondary harmony line. Also I tend to use Track versions to maintain a ‘safety copy’ of the untouched initial recording(s).

EDIT

Another thing I’ll do is use Save As… to create a new version of the Project that I’ll use just for recording vocals - usually call it Project Name - Vocal Tracking. Then I Record & Comp the vocals. When that’s all good Render the vocal to a new Track. Then back in the main version of the Project use Import Track from Project… to bring in the finished Vocal Track.

I use these kind of side Projects more and more. In the above example I don’t even try and clean up the recording version of the Project. Just leave it all messy with the Lanes open, which makes it easy to go back and make a different Comp or other changes. I often have one named Project - Lab where I can experiment around with Effects, Edits or really anything without risking the real Project.

Yes, New Track when adding some new material, of course.
And also yes, I’ve allways used “Save as” as a way of having concurrent alternative projects. Not for your use case, at least until now, it’s actually a very good ideia!

Thanks for the thoughts!
Will check it out if that works for me.

I’ve tried using lanes, that’s close to what I was looking for. I don’t really get the functionality of the comp tool. In the online help it is stated that
“Select the Comp tool or the Object Selection tool.”
So what does the comp tool more than the object selection tool?
Thanks!

The Select Tool behaves like it does for other stuff. You can Select something & delete it or change its color, etc. The Comp Tool on the other hand only lets you Select Audio Events for a specific specialized purpose. When you use the Comp Tool on an Audio Event it sets that Event to be the one that we hear.

Use the Select Tool to choose items you want to manipulate in some manner.

Use the Comp Tool to choose which Audio Events produce sound when you have multiple Audio Events stacked on Lanes.

With the comp tool, when you’re in lanes view, you can also split parts of the audio by dragging on an event (like you would do with the range tool) and it automatically gets selected, which is a super fast way to isolate the best parts of the audio events.
