How does one 'apply' a saved endpoint in a new (or old) project?

This may be one of those stupid questions, but I have looked for answers.

So I’ve been advancing my setup with some plugins, and saving the endpoints. Till now I have used previous scores as templates and just advanced my changes.

Now I am going back to a score from a year ago and want to bring in my changes. I applied my playback template (which shows my various Kontakt endpoints that I’ve used to play CinePerc sounds.) I see my endpoints listed as party of the template.

Now what? Changing the Playback Template applied Note Performer (my default) to everything. So now I find myself creating Kontakt instances, loading in my saved Kontakt multis, and manually applying the expression and percussion maps.

What did saving the endpoint do for me if I am repeating all the same work that created the endpoint? I see no way to ‘apply’ the endpoint that was saved.

What am I doing wrong or misunderstanding? I see many postings and videos about saving endpoints - nothing about loading or applying them. If that is not possible, why exactly does one save an endpoint?

You now need to make sure that the Endpoints are assigned to the Playback Template via the Edit Playback Template dialog (so that Dorico knows which of the saved Endpoints you want to use).

In the Entries list, leave NotePerformer at the bottom as Auto so that any instruments not in one of your custom endpoints gets sent there.

Or is this something you’ve already tried?

The order in which your custom Endpoints are listed in the Custom Playback Template is important.

Dorico will look through from top to bottom until it finds an endpoint to use for an instrument. (You can also fine-tune this behaviour by using the instrument filter and family filter). Since your NotePerformer likely includes all instruments, it should be bottom of the list!

I’ve wondered this myself because they never seem to reload or be available I’m confused: how does one assign an Endpoint to a custom playback template? I’ve not found a way to do that…but I am probably missing something very obvious.

Is there a video for that? Or a little more indepth discussion than in the manual?

Interesting. So I use Hauptwerk for virtual pipe organ sound regularly and, in order to have full flexibility, I need separate organ systems for each division (e.g. pedal, swell great, choir) and an independent general controller (I use a custom single staff system) to send CC data to the instrument as a whole.

With the instruments defined as Pedal, Great, Swell and Choir, no VST is going to inherently know that yet I can establish an Endpoint configuration and save it that is applicable. Despite saving a custom Hauptwerk playback template, the Endpoint present at the time of the save is never reloaded. I can certainly reload custom Expression Maps but not Endpoint configurations.

Thoughts?

I think Organ is the Instrument that would be identified, not Pedal, Swell or Great. You could define different Endpoints that set up a particular registration, but Dorico would not be able differentiate one from the other. (Though I’ve not explored Endpoints with custom instruments, or instrument variants)

That’s been my experience to date.

@DanielMuzMurray, I don’t know how I missed those videos. Thank you so very much for sharing this. I’ve learned something new!

Thanks - not sure when I’ll be applying a playback template to an older again - but the reordering of things in the Playback template is something I’ll implement now.

Next (stupid) question coming in a moment.
