How does one notate a sound effect for brass

Hey all, simple question. I would like for a few of my brass players to blow just air through their instruments as a sound effect. I can write the text/lyric at the designated point and use an x for the notehead. However, Dorico plays the actual pitch the music notehead is on. I would like to either assign this new notehead to a sound effect (in a perfect world) or just have it be silent. Whats the best choice for this situation…

Thanks!

You can silence the note via the Properties Panel.

If you want to assign a different sound, you will have to put the note into a different voice and enable Independent Voice Playback in Play mode.

Are the Players all reading the same instrumental part like a trumpet section who use divisi, or are the players reading their own part like 4 trumpets in an orchestra?

One you’d need to use Independant Voice Playback and the other you wouldn’t.

Hmmm, tried changing velocity to zero, but does nothing.

All on their own individual parts

So, if you want a different sound for those notes, you will likely need to use or create a Playing Technique to apply to those notes or span of notes.

Arco, pizz., mute… etc are all indicated by Playing Techniques. See below for the Edit Playing Technique dialog:

Down the bottom of that dialog, you will see Playback technique. I have clicked Edit… and the Edit Playback Techniques dialog is opened. These Playback Techniques are what will actually trigger the sound. The reason that these exist is because you might have several Playing Techniques that trigger the same Playback Technique (e.g. mute).

Choose a suitable one or create your own.

Next, you need to link the relevant Playback Technique to your VST so that it tells the VST what to do. This is done via an Expression Map:

You will see the + button which you click to add one of your Playback Techniques, also the various choices for how to trigger the sound (e.g. key switches, CC information, channel changes…etc).’

You need to make sure that you are editing the Expression Map which is applied to your Instrument:

That should be it.

I have likely missed something. There are many YouTube tutorials about this topic.

Use the Suppress playback option. Brass instruments are not controlled by velocity but rather a Continuous Controller (CC) as the volume can change across the duration of the note on wind instruments.

Wonderful! Very helpful!

Thank you!!
