How does PLE targeting work with Folder-Groups?

Cubase user here, prepping templates for incoming Cubase update next Wednesday…

Are they targeted as folders, or as groups?

Will my PLE scripts that target folders, still target them once they are switched to Folder-Groups?

Will there need to be a new PLE to target specifically folder-groups, or could perhaps users could use ‘is Folder and is Group’ as the method of targeting Folder-Groups while maintaining that ‘Folder’ targets all folders whether Group enabled or not. But then the question is, what if people want to target them as groups…

  • Target Folders+Folder-Groups:
    • Is folder
  • Target only folder-groups
    • is folder and is group
  • Target only folders and not folder-groups
    • Is folder and is not group
  • Target only groups, not folder-groups
    • is group and is not folder

Just checked. Folders that are folder/group channels are still considered “folder” in PLE. There is no target for container type = “group” in PLE and, there never has been. But the new folder/group tracks are not targeted by “track”. Only by “folder”.

@Graveley Thanks for taking the time to test,

Groups can be targeted in PLE although I wasn’t completely accurate in the targeting structure:

ah yes. Let me check

Group tracks targeted this way (container type=track, media type=group) does not target the new folder/group tracks.

Innnnnnnnteresting….

I’ll have to spend the day thinking about this protocol before I come to any conclusions as to what is needed/could be problematic.

@TimoWildenhain sorry to call you here, it’s not really a bug/issue so not posting in your bug thread, but something to think about if it wasn’t when it comes to PLE integration if PLE integration maintenance is of concern.

The easiest solution might just be a new track class Folder-Group

and then people can add it to their ple sripts

Folder or FolderGroup

Group or FolderGroup

etc

(also while on the subject of PLE/Macros, please see Keycommands: Macro-box - Please Add a Search Bar for Macros! - Cubase - Steinberg Forums )

edit

@Graveley what about the Track Visibility Filters, how does that work?

Since there’s no folder track option in the visibilty filters, it doesn’t change anything. (But the new folder/group tracks are filtered along with the group tracks)

Yeah that’s what I was wondering.

You’re welcome

Unfortunately, I’m just discovering that the new PLE Pre/Post Commands are limited to 4 each which is not nearly enough for me to clean up my PLE/Macro combos to be completely contained in PLEs.

why not stick with PLE/Macro combos?

Well, I was wanting to do some OCD clean up. I rechecked my PLE count, I actually am nearing 2000 PLE scripts… and many of them do incorporate macros, some are PLE→Macro+PLE+Macro+PLE

So it’s just a bit cluttered and confusing, was hoping to just have everything self-contained at least for those of which that are specific to each PLE script.

OCD indeed. (This sounds familiar :joy: .) Good luck.

Also, about the new folder/group channels, once you convert a folder track into a folder/group track, you lose the rectangular display of all the tracks in the folder along the track, and it instead shows automation for volume (or whatever parameter you select) like a group channel does. Kind messes with my editing workflow. I don’t think I’ll use these new folder/groups at all. I already have a macro that puts selected tracks into a folder and assigns them to a group channel etc. And a lot of times (drums kit for example) I have folders with tracks that need to be bussed to different groups.

I believe that can be changed right from the track header
