How does reorder work in drum pads?

Hi guys,

I’m trying understand how Dorico reorders existing pads in Drum pads panel when you try to reorder them by moving pads between rows.

It looks like the order is from left to right and from bottom to top. For example, there are 2 full rows

A1 A2 A3 A4 ST1(space top) ST2

B1 B2 B3 B4 SB1 (space bottom) SB2 SB3

  • If SB3 is deleted, A1 if moved down to the end instead of SB3
  • If B4 is moved up, SBx are shifted to the left and A1 is moved to the end of the bottom row. That means if I want to keep the same Ax on top row and add B4, B4 should be moved to the end of the bottom row first and then move STx down.

This behaviour is not very intuitive.

It’s really annoying for sure. I hope they change it so you can put stuff anywhere without displacement. If it’s any help, here’s the strategy that worked for me:

  • Add a bunch of empty spaces and put all of your pads at the top to give yourself space
  • Starting with the bottom pad in the 1st column. Layout, and plan to stack from the bottom up. Where each column is a different grouping of drums. Mine is a drum kit, so from right to left it’s Feet, snares, hihats, toms, ride, crashes, fx cymbals.
  • Once I dropped the first pad in each bottom column, I added from right to left, the next pad/technique in each column, and put a space there if I was out of pads for that category
  • I filled the gaps with some of the leftover pads one by one, dropping the pad into the spot, and moving the blank tile to the top right
  • Then I deleted all of the excess pads

Here’s mine if it helps visualize my strategy

Note that if you make any changes to an instrument or play technique in the setup page later, the corresponding pad will be reset to the top right. So if you’re going to change a lot, screenshot the pad layout.

This post by John Hinchey was very helpful for me, too.
